A letter from a U.S. soldier on the Rhine reports Germany offers 333 steins of regular beer for one dollar. American officials set the price at 12 pfennigs per stein, valuing the dollar at 4,000 pfennigs, suggesting easy recruitment for the American occupation army.
Secretary Baker announced an immediate withdrawal of a portion of American expeditionary forces from Siberia. He said the full evacuation was under consideration in relation to Czech evacuation and that selected units would head first to the Philippines before ships bring them home.
A damage action pursues Anna Hoffher against Melvin Beck Chas Borer and Herschell Duckworth of Ft. Branch alleging their roadster collided with an express wagon on Oct 14 1918, killing the horse and injuring Hoffher seriously. Trial by jury, Evansville attorneys represent defense and plaintiff.
The Indiana Senate approved the federal woman suffrage amendment 43 to 3, sending the measure to the House during a one day session. Indiana thus becomes the 26th state to ratify. House action followed with a 93 to 0 vote, amid victory cheers and political debate.
Trippett chairs the Indiana University Centennial arrangements to be held in Princeton January 23. Dr Sherman from the Chemistry Dept will attend as faculty representative. Speaker Dr Davis, a nationally reputed educator, plus James Fessler and Frank Hatfield, both university trustees, are expected. Fred R. Ewing to toast, with Twineham supplying a speech and cherry pie finale.
David Ummel of Ran son Kansas arrived for a visit with his brother Ben Ummel who works at the local mine boarding house run by Mother Turber. Ben has worked at the mine since 1895, one of two men employed there along with John Sweikert. Mother Turber, 73, opened and has run the boarding house for 25 years, known for caring for injured miners.
The county commissioners in session at the courthouse reappointed H. C. Heldt to succeed himself as a member of the memorial coliseum board of trustees. Heldt, from Oakland City, had first been appointed by the old board and his term expired at year start.
Prohibition officials enforce new limits on storing liquor at home and moving alcohol between residences. The rules bar keeping liquor in reserve without a permit and prohibit gifts, sales, or displays of liquor, with penalties for transfers between city and country properties.
United Press reports that at one minute past midnight, 1,400 special prohibition agents and federal officials launched full enforcement of constitutional prohibition. A nationwide liquor inventory began, with an estimated 60 million gallons of whiskey on hand. Kentucky reportedly holds the largest bonded stock. Officials expect much of the wet stock to be destroyed under new law.
Miss Fern Judd returns home after a brief visit with Ruth Smith in South Race Street. Mrs. Clarke and Mrs. Schwetzer go back to Jersey City after visiting Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Clark in Spring Street. Wayne Lawson of Indianapolis returns home after visiting relatives here. Several others including Read of Oakland City, Nellie Dorsey of Chicago, and Mrs. J. J. Davis with daughter Katherine depart Indianapolis area after visits. Frank Pace returns from Evansville. F B Unthank travels to Richmond, Md. Mrs. Caryell and daughter Mary Alice back home in Mt. Carmel after visiting Floyd Fields family. Marsh Yost returns from Velpen. Dr. J. M. Williams and daughter Gertrude of Owensville visited Thursday. O M Decker of Hazleton was here shopping Thursday. T. P. Mauck and daughter Phillis of Owensville visited Thursday. Dorothy Devine travels to Mt. Carmel to visit grandmother Lida Leighty. Helen Leighty of Pine Bluff, Ark, accompanies. Arch Cleveland of the U S Navy leaves Fort Branch for Newport, R I to resume duties.
Mrs Eliza Margaret Scott Grigsby died Thursday at 2 45 pm at her home on West Broadway from stomach cancer. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 2 pm at the Radcliffe end Colvin Morgue on South Main Street led by Rev C E Flynn. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery. She was 42 and survived by her husband Robert Grigsby and a daughter Mrs Dewy Minderizin of Vincennes.
