Ten Princeton women collected names of soldiers with no homes and on active service in the American Expeditionary Force. Each wrote to a young man and sent Christmas boxes as gifts. Mrs Henry Kister received a reply from a grateful recipient dated December 15 1917 expressing appreciation for the letters and gifts.
David L Byers known in Gibson County as a leper died at his Ft Branch home early Saturday. He was buried at Enon Cemetery after a secret burial at 9 30 pm. Health officials delayed news to avoid public disturbance. his wife and daughter were kept in quarantine. He had arrived from Indianapolis Dec 12 1916 for treatment and isolation. The Ft Branch community debated a proposed leper home on the county farm but court injunctions blocked relocation. Nearby civic leaders and the new Princeton city administration took office with Mayor Noble leading a transition and appointments to police fire and city positions.
New county appointments announced include Joseph W Barton as road superintendent, Samuel Fettinger as superintendent of the county poor farm, Henry W Johnson as county attorney from Owensville, William McKenzie as courthouse janitor, and A L Marvel as county veterinarian. Miners' examining board features Joseph G Applegath Otis Carnahan and Ruby Drew. health officer to be named next Tuesday.
The remains of Mrs Mary J Fairchilds died Friday at her daughter’s Tulsa Oklahoma home. They arrive in Evansville Saturday afternoon and will be buried at Odd Fellows cemetery after a 3 pm service at 801 South Prince Street conducted by Rev E G Burdette. Her daughter Mrs Hodges accompanied the body. Ernest Paul and family were en route home from Los Angeles via Utah and expect to arrive by Wednesday night.
The new administration takes the oath of office promptly at noon today. The retiring mayor delivers a brief review of the old administration. The first council meeting is set for 7 39 tonight.
The grand jury is convened to probe the murder of Ben, Tab Fou, and other matters with six members named and three appointed to fill vacancies. The town also unveils a large new police force and a council meeting tonight where Mayor Noble will outline expectations for the administration. the public is invited with seating provided.
