The Friday night basketball game with Orwell High School was postponed due to heavy rain that prevented the visiting team from making the trip. The contest will be rescheduled for a later date.
The Princeton and Gibson County banks are described as healthy and progressive in statements this week. There are 13 banks in Gibson County, a high number for its population, with all institutions deemed sound and worthy of support.
Licenses issued for marriages rose sharply in 1916 with Gibson County couples leading the surge. Records show 353 licenses in the peak year, up from 288 in 1915 and 230 in 1912, though population growth does not explain the rise. The year 1916 averaged just under one license per day and 1917 may exceed that pace.
The Southern Railway will place 24 inch white disks with R BR cross on nine foot pedestals 300 feet from crossings on highways beyond the railway right of way. County permission will be sought to erect these approach signs designed to catch drivers before they reach crossings.
A temperance meeting will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the United Presbyterian church to discuss important matters. G. W. Guthrie is the chairman and all who support good government are urged to attend.
W A Shumate purchased the interest of partner Roll Smith in the Shumate and Smith monitorium. Smith plans to move to Mt Vernon to open a clothing establishment.
In a small courthouse meeting, Wade H. Miller was chosen as campaign chairman for the city Democratic organization. Joshua Duncan became vice chairman, W. L. Davis secretary, and Henry Reinhart treasurer. Theodore Miller presided as retiring chair. The group expects an enthusiastic campaign.
Secretary Lansing to testify before the rules committee investigating the note leak to Wall Street. Mississippi Rep Harrison says financial newspapers caused the leak and subpoenas are issued for correspondents of financial papers. Gardner supports the charge by citing a Dow Jones dispatch about market activity before the note release. Suspicions center on financial writers and embassy attaches.
A small showing of oil was struck in the well drilled on Mt Olympus school grounds. Drilling paused until Monday after reaching 1527 feet with a sand interval indicating a deeper pull is needed to reach the Ford well flow nearby.
Born to Mr and Mrs Oscar Schneider of 814 North Race Street a son on New Year’s Day. The father is a blacksmith on North Hatt Street.
The Civic Club met January 5 at Hotel Kidd with many members and guests. Reports show growth from sixty nine to ninety three members, twelve programs planned, and hopes for a children's playground. Officers for the coming year were elected with O M Welborn as President and O M Kolb as Vice President.
General Murguia says Villa suffered irreparable defeat near Jimenez with 1,500 Villistas dead wounded or captured and 100 government troops lost, while US agents dispute Carranza victory claiming Villa is moving northward.
Next Sunday many Indiana churches will observe Prohibition Sunday with pastors dedicating sermons to temperance. The movement is backed by the Indiana Dry Federation aiming to promote abstinence and call for responsible alcohol laws.
