President Wilson tells British workers that America will not join any European alliance or League of Nations. He warns European states not to ignore the will of the masses worldwide, stressing independence from European pacts.
The American third army cuts most lines of communication between the occupied zone and Germany, leaving two trunk wires to Berlin for official use only. Wires cut at Coblenz bridge head. Pershing’s decree to govern the district takes effect with Americans in civil affairs and German officials used for aid, while post office and government buildings run by Americans. Identification cards for ages 12 and older are to be carried under local German authorities’ oversight.
Mrs. Pierce on East Glendale street displays a German helmet sent by her grandson Sergeant Ross Pierce who served on the front. After fumigation the war trophy sits on the table in the childrens room for patrons to view.
President Wilson told 5000 Manchester workers that the United States will join no alliance not formed by all nations and no balance of power. He urged a world covenant to uphold right, stressing partnership of right over European politics and future adjustment to avoid large conflicts.
The year 1918 ends at midnight Tuesday and War Saving Stamps sales close at 6 PM from the Princeton postoffice. Citizens are urged to complete their quotas and convert thrift cards into stamps before the year closes, preparing for 1919.
Berlin December 80 A German group favoring allied occupation plans to arrest all American and British reporters to force a political shift. Police Prefect Eichorn warned that such arrests could draw Allied troops into the capital and topple the radicals amid socialist and Spartacist power struggles.
L. W. Patterson of Evansville, 22, was arrested Saturday night by Sheriff Phillips and Deputy Fettinger on forgery charges. He cashed a $25 check drawn on Harry Bruner near Watoka, Christmas Day at Edward Wirtz’s pool room. it proved a forgery. The check was made out to C. TB. John. Patterson had worked for Mrs. Geiseke northeast of the city and earlier for Bruner. He is jailed.
Albert Emge of Haubstadt and William V. Hill of Washington were each fined 100 dollars and costs and sentenced to 30 days at the state penal farm for liquor law violations. The sentence, suspended upon payment, followed a Friday night accident where a bottle of liquor in Hillman’s car leaked fumes. Emge was seized Saturday with liquor concealed on his person.
A young woman died from fatal burns sustained Sunday morning in an incident reported locally. The fire investigation continues as authorities seek causes and potential safety lapses.
Mrs. Ernice Reeser 30 died after a kerosene oil can exploded while lighting a stove at 7:45 AM. She survived hours in agony, with husband Walter Reeser, a Princeton gas plant superintendent, away at work. Investigation planned. funeral set in Embree Street home with burial in local cemetery.
American intelligence officers report a grim German supply picture with shortages in butter eggs milk and meat. Food allowances are modest while clothing costs soar making civilian apparel unaffordable for most workers though farms have winter stock and essentials remain adequate for now.
Indianapolis Dec 59 Gov Goodrich plans to finish his biennial message in Winchester today undisturbed. He will highlight Republican Indiana’s war records and party platform pledges and push constitutional amendments including woman suffrage. Proposals seek appointive state superintendent, appointive clerks, property tax classification, a state budget, item veto power, and county registration classification.

White river rises beyond last week high mark as floodwaters recede. Much corn in fields thought safe last week is again in danger while Patoka river falls and easing flood conditions persist.
The war office announced that Japanese reserve troops on the Siberian front will be recalled. The order was issued December 30 with the move described as a general recall of reserve units.
