President Wilson appeals to a British audience on the need for a League of Nations and says foundations for its speedy formation have been laid. He asserts lives sacrificed should not be in vain and urges action to secure postwar peace.
Report from Camp Taylor Kentucky states the 38th Division trained at Camp Shelby Mississippi and including Gibson county men joined fighting in France before the armistice. About 2,500 men of the 149th infantry were sent to France on October 26 and fought in key engagements.
President Wilson told a London Guild Hall audience that a league of nations must be formed or present gains will not endure. He praised support from British leaders and emphasized a permanent concert of power as essential to peace, saying the world seeks unity beyond balance of power and the charge to lead this enterprise rests on humanity.
London reports that Britain and the United States have not reached a common basis on freedom of the seas though a league of nations agreement exists. Britain demands the navy remain the safeguard for mercantile interests and colonies, prepared to retrench and sink the German fleet as a starting point.
Mrs. Sarah A. Youngman, born October 22, 1827 in Princeton, dies at 2:30 am at her home on Princeton and Emerson. She lived her entire life here, witnessed four wars, and remained lucid and active in the community, leaving a son William Lewis Carpenter and two daughters Emma Jane Small and Katherine Youngman. Funeral at the residence Monday at 2:30 pm, interment Warnock Cemetery.
