William Reis an employee near the coal mine was struck by a car Friday night. He stepped onto the track to light a match and was hit, breaking his right leg in two places. Motorman Charles White did not see him until too late to stop. He was taken home and physicians were summoned.
In Princeton heavy snowfall on Friday afternoon prompted early press notices about a Christmas blanket. Local charity distributed 60 baskets containing all items for a Christmas dinner to aid the poor as businesses closed early and residents gathered for the holiday.
A passenger train collided with a freight near Veedersburg Indiana. The crash left the freight engineer A C Henry 81 from Charleston dead. Dr Bower 45, named as a victim, was also reported among the dead or injured.
In Scranton Pennsylvania a passenger train collided with a stalled freight near a section stop. The conductor reportedly set torpedoes to warn No 9 about the danger and a brakeman stayed behind to flag the distant line. Two people were killed in the wreck.
Evansville veterans denounce a proposed official marker design that pairs the Union shield with the Confederate flag. The Farragut Post resolutions condemn the emblem combining flags as lacking national or international recognition. Committee members Spain, Rippur, and Meyerhoff drafted the protest notes.
Evansville Indiana December 24. The Ohio River nears crest stage with upriver stations lower. Louisville reports falling stages as the river nears a 40.3 foot mark at midnight. A yesterday morning wind caused a flurry among river men but damage reported is light. Double fines on steamboats John S Hopkins and Bowling Green at the wharf.
United Press report from London notes wartime Britain sees fewer births and more civilian deaths than in 1943. In Greater London births fall by 35,000 while civilian deaths rise by 15,000. Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Dublin, Edinburgh, and Glasgow show similar trends. An overall infant mortality rise is linked to war induced stress and conditions, with many victims over fifty. Four hundred deaths occurred in London in the week ending November 20, and authorities warn the birth rate drop stems from the war’s devasting influence.
A despatch notes that war trophies captured from German forces, which had been displayed in Paris, are to be shown throughout France. Marseilles has already received cannons from its garrison, with other popular cities expected to follow, showcasing French prowess.
London reports claim Germany would annex Belgium at once and refuse to recognize Minister Brand Whitlock. A German casualty total around 2,000,000 with Austrian losses near 1,500,000. Allies made some gains through dense fogs in Flanders.
A fragment notes Mrs Cisy Mulhail will spend this afternoon with Mr Carmet and will attend events tonight and Sunday with Mr Mulhail. The partial report hints at social plans involving the two men and Mrs Mulhail across the weekend.
