Mayor Niemeier handed out year end salary checks to city officials and fire department members on Saturday. The gesture provided funds before Christmas, ensuring they could face the holiday with relief and gratitude.
Mrs. Mardaret Weaver, arrested in Birmingham, faces extradition to Georgia on an indictment charging her as a co defendant before the fact in the slaying of William Coburn, a Ku Klux Klan attorney. Weaver, who denies involvement, previously admitted knowing Philip Fox but claimed no role in the murder.
Senator James E. Watson announced plans to press for a bill after Congress reconvenes to use one quarter of accrued interest on German-owned property held by the American alien property custodian to buy wheat and fats from U.S. farmers for relief in Germany. The plan would feed undernourished Germans and reduce U.S. wheat surplus, with no cost to American taxpayers.
A Ford coupe owned by Floyd Kuhn of South Prince Street was stolen from a parking spot near the First Baptist church Sunday night between 7 and 9. A report states about nine gallons of gasoline were in the car and the license number is 325-316. No police current lookout.
At public auction in the courthouse corridor Silas E. Morris executor of the late John Y. Morris had two Gibson county bank stocks sold. Five shares of Farmers & Merchants Ft Branch brought 170 a share and were bought by Wm FL Merrix. Eight shares of Citizens Trust bank Princeton brought 172 per share and were bought by Ford Garrett. Fifteen shares of Lutherfeld State bank sold for 410 per share to Robert Ib Morris & Son.
A speeding motorist failed to stop as he tried to pass around a car and buggy at the second bridge two miles from the city. The crash threw Mr Kraze, his wife, and a baby from the buggy. The baby was initially thought dead but revived. Mrs Kruse and the baby were not seriously injured. The buggy was badly damaged and the Kruses were taken home by a passing car.
A tragic Hammond accident near Hartdale at night killed Michael Somoley 66 his wife Josephine 26 and their children Theresa four and Albert six. Witnesses say Somoley drove onto tracks and stalled as a Pennsylvania train approached, striking the vehicle and causing fatalities.
The post office will open until ten o clock Christmas morning with city carriers performing morning delivery only. No rural free delivery on Christmas Day, but rural carriers will distribute mail at post office windows until ten AM. Parcel post delivery continues all day. Fred R. Ewing, P.M.
Evansville Dec 24 An additional pardon signed by President Coolidge and Attorney General Dougherty restores full rights to Ossenberg 1106 Lincoln Avenue who was convicted in federal court in 1920 for alleged violation of federal prohibition laws. The case hinged on the testimony of Van Vickrell who testified against him and later claimed he was a bootlegger. Ossenberg served four months of a six month sentence in Atlanta and has long maintained his innocence.
Fragmented OCR weather note shows partly cloudy tonight and Tuesday with unsettled conditions in the north. Temperatures near similar to Sunday, with high around 945 and low near 303. Sunset and sunrise times are listed ambiguously.

Federal agents raid Williamson County Illinois arresting twenty five suspects and deputizing locals. Detainees are held in Benton Franklin County jail after arrests in Marion Herzvin Carterville Number Nine mining camp Scotio gboro and surrounding roadhouses. A crowd of about 3000 gathers in Benton public square Sunday morning.
The Francois Indiana postoffice in Francisco was burglarized Saturday night. Robbers took several parcels money and stamps from the cash register. Authorities led by Sheriff Wdden investigate. No valuable goods were reported stolen. The post office sits in Glenn Witherspoon store where the postmaster operates.
The body of John Ross of Indiana, a Spanish-American War veteran known as Rattle Snake Jack, was exhumed from Potter's Field and given a military funeral by Butcher Post and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was 72 and had long toured carnivals with trained ponies and dogs.
In Sitaron Pennsylvania Secretary James J. Davis speaks at a Welsh Baptist church urging a work a day Christianity. He defends faith against modern reformers and calls for religious freedom and tolerance grounded in the Bible and the example of Roger Williams. The speech champions old fashioned faith and warns against secular attack on religion.
Four members of Theodore Fill's family died in a Paterson apartment. The bodies were found by another occupant. the son and daughter were identified in their rooms and bathroom. County Physician Armstrong attributed the deaths to carbon monoxide from gas used to heat water and a pipe heater, paint and overheating contributing factors.
In Cooper's Mills Maine a Polish migrant named Snow killed six people and then himself after a spree that began with the slaying of his wife Ida Snow, her aunt Eva Eaton, and mother Ruth Brann. Kenneth Jewett and Mrs. Jewett were also slain in North Whitefield, with Snow allegedly taking Deputy Sheriff Frank Jewett’s automobile before the Cooper's Mills killings. The five month old survived as authorities piece together motive and sequence.
Chicago December 24. Leo Koretz Panama oil bubble promoter vanished on December 14 amid accusations of swindling friends and relatives of up to 5 million dollars. Authorities report no solid clues and believe he escaped to a foreign country as investigators Stanley Klarkowski and John Sbarbaro continue the search.
