City business houses and county offices report full participation in Red Cross membership. Leaders praise newspapers for patriotism and urge all residents to join, volunteering at headquarters and supporting workers in this public drive.
Elks arrange a citywide entertainment for Princeton youngsters next Tuesday. White children meet at 1 30 pm, go to The Noble for a 2 pm show with Fatty Arbuckle, then candy and fruit. Colored children assemble at 2 36 pm for the same program indoors, with a committee supervising all ages and wraps if cold. Over 500 last year, 1000 expected. orphans included. Activities span wards with appointed volunteers and same schedule for all, non charitable in nature.
Dr H A Barnard federal food administrator telegraphed county food directors with bread prices set at seven cents per pound wholesale and eight cents retail. He warned that if wheatless and meatless days are not widely observed bakeries and meat shops may close one day per week after January 1. Also notes Henry Phillips died at his north of city home after a long illness. He was an uncle of Mrs Chag Niemter.
Russell Carlisle a former Princeton High School student on furlough visits with his grandfather Zach Whittaker west of the city. Carlisle serves in the U S Navy aboard the battleship North Dakota preparing for duties at sea.
The Senate concurred with House amendments to the national prohibition amendment. Forty seven senators voted for the measure and eight against. The veto now passes to state legislatures for ratification within seven years by three fourths. If approved, nationwide prohibition begins one year after ratification.
A Monday conference led by Mayor Head requests twenty plainclothes officers, men and women, to combat shoplifting through Christmas. Chief Helsley to enforce, with retailers aiming to deter holiday theft as stores display goods. Countermeasures include bag checks and vigilant supervision in rest rooms as clerks distract shoppers.
In the final meeting of the current administration the council passed several appropriation ordinances draining general funds into street water and health departments and others to cover year end deficiencies. A special meeting is set for January 2 to approve bills before turning affairs to the incoming administration.
Hal Hinton head clerk and window dresser at the Fair store earned a compliment from Herbert Hoover United States food administrator for the ingenious Hoover Week display a novel window arrangement. A photograph was sent to the Dry Goods Economist trade journal prompting Hoover to extend praise to Hinton. Felts of Boonville Indiana returned home after being called to the city due to the serious accident of his brother in law W S Whitten Whitten’s condition is improving.
Shiploads of American Christmas gifts reached the front in France with packages bearing U S A postmarks. The Christmas morning drive for American fighters at the front is valued at about a million and a half dollars in cash and immense sentiment.
Milwaukee leaders express doubt that states will ratify the prohibition amendment. Charles Manegold Jr says public sentiment will shift toward beer and light wines as in Europe, while brewers remain pessimistic about the house vote.
Senator Harding of Ohio wins Senate approval for a resolution ordering an investigation into the shipping situation. Senator Fletcher, chair of the commerce committee, said the inquiry would begin immediately to uncover why the merchant marine and ship production lag despite large approprations.
Vincennes reported the top tally in the state Red Cross membership drive with 2,050 members, highlighting strong community participation and a successful fundraising push.
Attorneys L C Embree and Sanford K K Trippet attended the funeral of Major G V Menzies in Mt. Vernon as representatives of the Gibson County Par Association.
