United Press reports a rising spirit of mutual accommodation between President Wilson and European leaders, foretelling a harmonious peace conference and defeat of Germany’s discordant aims. Direct U.S. involvement eases European nerves as personal contact proves more persuasive than letters.
An authoritative report states the Third American Army of Occupation now controls a large territory, with officials declaring there is no opposition to the arrangement. The dispatch notes stable control and orderly administration across the region.
On December 17 the Third Army occupied over 4500 square miles of German territory across the Rhine. It administers hundreds of villages and miles of railways, completing the occupation with no hostile acts by Germans or soldiers. The 250,000 strong force moved rapidly within a month, enduring tough marches and worn uniforms as it wrapped up in exact accordance with preplanned steps.

Patoka township appoints P. S. Brownlee and captains John Zwissler Arthur Whitsett Sam Carthers Cassius White Frank Archer Orrus Westfall John Bingham as drive continues with booths in banks and business houses and a $4 per family member goal.
All questionnaires filled and returned to local boards will be kept as historical records in the war department vault. They will aid the war risk insurance bureau in checks on soldiers who receive allotments and provide records of men eligible to join postwar organizations like the G A R. They will not reveal occupation earning capacity or character.
City Council approved reorganizing the department during a regular meeting. Firemen Ralph Little and Earl Grubb resigned. Clyde West, former fire chief, was appointed as fireman and assistant chief. Efforts aim to place men in the business district and improve emergency readiness with 500 feet more hose. Old wagon to be readied for emergency use.
A memorial service for Lieut Carter Alcorn son of George and Ida Alcorn will be conducted by Rev J C Cummins at Enon Church Sunday afternoon January 12 1919. All returned soldiers are urged to attend.
Sheriff Phillips departed this morning with Frank Buchanan who was sentenced to six months at the penal farm for assault. He also transported Elwood Foster to the Boys' School in Indianapolis for placement.
The Red Cross fund for a Christmas box for each wounded soldier at West Baden shows numerous donations. Contributions include amounts from Mr. and Mrs. Ennis Captain Schnarr Mrs. Reeves Colley Orth Harbison Finney Ewing McRoberts Toelle Dunn Crow Fagan Brownlee Dorsey Mauckey Joyce Paxton Levi Anthony Lucas Woods Ingle Witherspoon Reisman Barber Weiss and several others.
In Berlin the Spartacus group called for immediate police disarmament and confiscation of arms and munitions. They demand a workers militia, abolition of police officers, removal of military officers from councils, cancellation of debts to a fixed limit, confiscation of fortunes above a threshold, and seizure of latched estates banks coal mines and factories.
The home of Jesse B. French, about six miles south of Princeton and two and a half miles east of Ft. Branch, was destroyed by a fire Monday night around seven. The family sat at supper when smoke and flames erupted in the second story. the upstairs contents were lost, some items from the lower floor were saved. The house, known as the old French homestead, was built 63 years ago by Phillip B. French and has long housed the French family. The structure and furniture were insured. Mr. French, a Gibson county pioneer, maintained a well kept historic home despite its aged appearance.
