The Senate today passed the Poindexter bill making it a crime to foment strikes or interfere with interstate commerce. It carries a maximum fine of 15,460 dollars and 10 years imprisonment. Directors or managers of railroads would be barred from any combination aiming to settle labor disputes that affects interstate commerce.
Mrs W B Franklin returned home this morning from East St. Louis where she underwent an operation. She was accompanied by her husband and many friends in the city will be glad to learn that her condition is very much improved.
George W. Turpin age 59 was found dead in his bed at 1017 Stormont Avenue. The coroner's inquest is held this afternoon. He is survived by a brother and a sister, both city residents. He recently worked on street and road projects for George Soller. Heart disease is suspected. he had warned he would not live until next spring. He died alone in his rooming house.
Ernest Mesale, a French chef, pleaded ignorance of the law after being charged with kissing Cecilia Mehaj, 16, a kitchen maid. Police say the girl must be willing, and Mesale will be arraigned.
The Central & Coast Oil Company, after absorbing Alabama Oil, struck a new oil gusher on the Vierling lease in Gibson county, south of Oatsville. The well, drilled to 1650 feet after a prior dry hole, produced oil flooding trenches before being plugged. Early estimates place output as unconfirmed. the find opens a potential new oil region long viewed as wildcat territory.
A late Wednesday fire at 709 South Hall Street caused about 3500 in damage to J. H. Hogan’s home. Sparks from a kitchen chimney on a windy day fed flames through the roof. fire crews limited further ruin and the loss was partially insured. A second morning blaze at Claude McDonald’s home on Seminary Street caused 25 in damage, with interior water damage from bucket dousing prior to the fire department arrival.
Washington reports Germany restocks American toy aisles this Christmas. Import data from the Department of Commerce shows a marked revival, with Germany poised to fill nearly half the stockings once held in 1914 just before the war.

Indiana State Capitol Dec 16 Costs of public utilities have peaked and may ease as coal prices drop next year. The Public Service Commission notes no overall decline in costs this year and predicts lower coal and material prices, with copper and poles showing easing trends and wages staying high due to labor efficiency.
Mt Vernon Dec 16 The Patron Teachers club joined protests over high school girls attire at a Junior high meeting. Members debated outfits some deem not improper but not in accord with school standards. The council will examine the issue of wearing evening gowns in school.
Mt. Vernon Ind Dec 16 The oldest man in Posey county died at the Posey county poor infirmary. Wesley Woods aged 160 years 8 months and 20 days was an inmate since 1906. Born in Spencer county he later drove a stage between New Harmony and Princeton and a circus wagon before railroads. He never married and was a Methodist.
Investment offerings in Great Britain totaled 342,726,411 pounds in the first ten months of 1920, according to estimates to Bankers Trust Company. The total is more than double the 1919 period and 100,000,000 greater than the entire year 1913.
In New York on December 14 the motion picture industry vowed to back Herbert Hoover with 2,500,000 to aid 250,000 of Europe’s 3.5 million starving children. Hoover urged rapid relief within sixty days as relief societies faced suspension. William A. Brady and Sidney R. Cohen announced the pledge.
Rex the pet poodle becomes heir to $8,000 left by Mrs. Robert E. Porter with a probate court filing in Chicago. The will directs daily baths, sauerkraut, and a Christmas tree each year for the dog. R. F. Jobling of Cascade Locks Ore is left $5.
The Barton township farmers institute meets at Mackey on Tuesday and Wednesday December 28 and 29. Principal speakers are R A Ogg and Mrs Hortense Tapp Moore. Music is directed by Miss Lena Hemmer. A pig and cattle judging contest for boys under 16 and bread and sewing contests for girls under 16 are scheduled. F W Winkler serves as president and Edgar Beatty as secretary.
In Kokomo Indiana on December 16 a church faction debate settled whether the First Baptist Church should show motion pictures. The opposing side argued films would commercialize religion and the pastor put the decision to a debating team. Prominent citizens acted as judges and the pro film faction lost.
Dec 15 5 pm forecast records a high of 42 and low of 36 with partly cloudy skies. Compared with last year on the same date the high was 82 and the low 8 with clear weather. Burton.
