In St. Paul on December 12 the general strike affecting all industries in the Twin Cities was called off at 1 P.M. Every striking worker was ordered back to work, with some men denied reentry after returning shortly after quitting.
Miss Mabel Colvin and Ralph W. Finney wed at 6 30 p m Wednesday in the First Methodist parsonage on West Emerson street. Rev W M Whitsitt officiated, with Mrs Roy Noble as a guest. The couple will reside in East St. Louis Illinois after a short wedding trip.
Fred and John Shuel of Company M arrived in Hattiesburg Mississippi on Thursday to visit their father Jacob Shuel who is said to be no better at his Fort Street home. The brothers received a five day furlough.
Washington December 13 Eight months into the war the U S rifle factories produce only half the daily output of prewar levels. General Crozier blamed delays at the War Department and a lack of field tests for the Browning machine gun while Secretary Baker faced blame. Crozier noted the army began equipping before formal war declaration and disputes over gun types hindered production for a year. He said the secretary of war is responsible. The U S bought 350 Lewis guns from Britain for Mexican trouble due to shortages. Marriage license for Ralph W Finney and Laura M Colvin, Princeton.
The street commissioner and a crew used a road grader to clear snow from the public square this afternoon. Mr and Mrs William Blythe of Kansas and Miss Catherine Blythe of Oakland City visited Baldwin Heights, then Owensville. Mrs Welter Herrman and her son Walter Fred Jr of Mt Carmel stayed with Mr and Mrs Beloat in East Water Street.
Dr Chedzlii delivered a racial address at K P Hall on the black man's place in the Great War. He denounced a Negro preacher as a racial demagogue, praised lung power over demagoguery, and drew applause. The speech urged loyalty to the flag and a better day in 1920 with justice and harmony.
British lines around Cambrai remained firm amid heavy fighting as Field Marshal Haig reported Germans drove some troops through British trenches at Bullecourt but were repulsed. German attacks along a wider eastern front caused local fighting with prisoners taken. later reports say German efforts near Bullecourt slowed with limited gains as bombardment of French front continued.
Geneva dispatch reports Mouktar Bey, Turkish delegate to the Berne Conference on prisoner exchange, has asked Constantinople for full negotiating authority to pursue a separate peace.
The Fourth district appeal board reports 922 dependency claims with 491 granted exemption after investigation and 431 held for service. In Gibson county 82 dependency, 28 service, 54 discharged. agricultural 26 with 22 held for service and 4 exempted. industrial 8 with 6 exempted. William C Luhring of Haubstadt died at Camp Taylor after taking an appeal. several others from Posey Vanderburgh Spencer and Warrick counties had appeals denied.
Four bandits halted the state bank at La Grange thirty miles west of Chicago at noon today and escaped with between 15000 and 25000 dollars. local police searched the area for clues and suspects.
The court heard the case of the state against Katie Hopkins colored for theft during today’s session.
An explosion in a Bethlehem munition plant loading room in Wilmington Delaware killed Chief Police Jacobson who was carrying a blazing shell case at the time. The blast set fires, injured none else, and scattered hundreds of loaded projectiles and shell fragments over the area driving workers and firemen to safety. Some fragments reached houses a mile away.
The initial American ambulance section in Italy left Milan today, forming three units with 65 ambulances and 110 American university students. A large sendoff occurred in Milan as the Red Cross plans to field about 200 cars by January 1, marking America's first official participation on the Italian front.
