The White River bridge at Hazleton Indiana, built with state and federal funds, opened to traffic amid a Dixie Bee Line ceremony. Officials led a motorcade, salutes boomed by a French 75, and a program featured addresses by regional leaders and politicians.
Bronze tablets 30 by 20 inches were placed at both ends of the bridge to honor the Indiana State Highway Commission and contributors. The ceremony in Mason J. Niblack presided as part of the program, with large crowds from Evansville Princeton and Hazleton attending despite bad weather. Officials and bands arrived, a gun squad and police aided traffic, and decorations featured Old Glory and color bunting along the bridge.
March 13 1806 by Mrs BE Harrington details Jarvis Hazleton who gained 100 acres from the government for military service. The town on White River grew through land grants, sawmills, a distillery and a new community hall. Hazleton, once a lumber port and river trade point, evolved with churches schools and a modern water system.
