Hazleton Bridge Tops the Midwest Highway Milestone
Hazleton bridge over the river is described as the largest exclusive highway bridge west of the Mississippi, weighing about 26,600 tons with eight steel spans and twenty one concrete spans. The structure sits on deep rock foundations, rises 35 feet above low water, and required 1.5 million pounds of structural steel and 6,000 cubic yards of concrete, with substantial earthwork on north and south approaches.

Stein Construction Wins Hazleton Bridge Bid in 1922
The Indiana state highway commission awarded the Hazleton bridge contract on April 10, 1922 to Stein Construction of Milwaukee. The bid of 237000 dollars beat around 40 competitors and rose to about 275000 with added reinforced concrete spans and roadway costs. Work began mid May 1922 under project engineer H. Hanapel and superintendents R. P. Petters and C. J. Moore.
