Officials urge buyers to distribute Christmas shopping over two weeks to aid labor conservation and rely on experienced salespeople, promoting a wholesome spirit without succumbing to gloom or pessimism.
Weather kept many away yet a large crowd visited the Stephens store for a corn show and corn products demonstration. One hundred eight entries competed for prizes totaling 33 dollars with awards across best ear corn bread muffins and girl under 16 categories. Geo Harvey won multiple top honors and county officials judged the exhibits.
Victor Cassidy deputy state game warden from Jasper Indiana was shot and killed while hunting in Mississippi. He was 42 and survived by a wife and two children. Cassidy had served as Dubois County sheriff and recently helped seining overflow ponds in Gibson and Knox counties. His body was returned to Jasper for funeral arrangements.
Sunday night temperatures hit record lows in December with 12 below zero and 11 below on Saturday, causing heavy snow and widespread travel disruption. Schools closed or dismissed, coal supply tightened but Princeton aided by William Jackson to avert shortages, while rail and tram service suffered severe delays.

The United States food administration set an eight cent price for a one pound loaf unwrapped on a cash and carry basis starting today in Indianapolis. Credit and delivery could raise costs while wholesale unwrapped loaves cost seven cents and wrapped loaves seven and a half. The price drop results from a uniform government formula eliminating competing varieties.
The first district for selling war saving and thrift stamps began in Evansville with C B Enlow calling county chairmen to form a district-wide plan. Plans mirror Liberty Bond efforts but focus on schools and community groups to reach all areas. Buyers may use any post office employee or carrier and add stamps to their thrift card later. Gibson county is to announce its chapter soon.
Mary Pickford appears in A Poor Little Rich Girl based on a celebrated novel and stage success. The Artcraft production promises high entertainment value and many theatergoers expect the Empress to be taxed beyond previous showings. The seven reel film aims for top cinema market leadership with live interest.
London reports the capture of Jerusalem by General Allenby and British expeditionary forces. The Holy City returns to Christian control for the first time since 1517, with Gaza Beer Sheba Jaffa and Joppa taken as Allied advances ease the encirclement. Enver Pasha's power in Turkey appears to wane as British forces advance through Mesopotamia and Palestine.
Ensign and Mrs. Rodda will conduct a noonday service in the Machine Shop on Tuesday. Ensign Rodda recently returned from France. Over $1,000,000 has been spent by The Salvation Army in its war activities. The Queen Esther Circle of Gibson Street Methodist church will hold its regular monthly business meeting Monday evening at the home of Miss Elsie Phiar in south Prince Street. All members are requested to attend.
The W C T U will hold a Wednesday afternoon gathering at 212 South Main Street the home of Mrs Fred Ward offering a community women’s group event in town.
