Ten day lay off for employes of Southern shops

The Southern Railway shops in the region will close December 21 through December 31 for a holiday lay off. About sixty eight workers are to be laid off indefinitely, with 63 at the main shops and 7 at East St. Louis. Most workers will return January 2, keeping older staff levels and wartime employment proximity.

Gas Franchise Sought For Francisco Gas Supply

Claude Thompson visited Francisco yesterday to pursue a franchise for piping gas from a well drilled on the Adams farm east of town. A heavy gas flow at 410 feet depth 45 feet into the sand could supply business houses homes and industry in Francisco for a long time.

Princeton firm to install phone alarm boxes for fire safety

The Princeton Telephone company plans to set up phone systems in fire alarm boxes to serve fire protection. The system, long contemplated, is expected to be in service soon.

Atlantic Pacific highway near Fairfield completed

The last concrete slabs were laid on the Atlantic Pacific highway near Fairfield and the road is complete to that city. It will be opened to the public within a week or ten days, with only a short gap left just north of Wayne City to be finished next year. The section will be kept in good condition.

In Brazil Indiana Susie Mishler 17 was shot in the abdomen when a revolver in the hands of Albert Johnson 17 of Clinton was discharged at her home as they prepared to go to a basketball game.
