Mr. and Mrs. Richard Riggs marked the longest marriage at 57 years and Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Shafer the shortest at four months. The event drew more attendees than any weeknight of the series.

Miners Drowned After Mine Flood Near Belleville
In Belleville Illinois, workers in the Radium coal mine pierced a wall with pneumatic drills flooding the mine with water from an adjacent abandoned shaft. Three of 250 miners drowned as water and gas rushed through tunnels extending three quarters of a mile to the main shaft. Two bodies were recovered but could not be moved. The wall collapsed with a roar as the flood surged toward the main shaft, and the survivors were hauled 60 feet to the surface.
