Last year America’s people and business men pursued war effort and Christmas comes with peace. This year Bethlehem’s dawn mirrors a nearer peace on earth and love for friends and family. Princeton’s Greatest Store urges early shopping to please friends, save time, and reflect quality gifts.
Glove sale touts a large stock from wool knitted to French Kid and Cape Leather gloves. Prices range from 29 cents for children's mittens to about 2.95 for Kayser silk and 1.65 for Kayser double silk gloves, with many colors and styles advertised.
Navy reports constant contact with the presidential ship George Washington and convoys as it races toward Brest. Wilson plans to speak plainly on his fourteen peace principles on arrival in France, while resting and consulting with Rear Admiral Grayson and his physician.
The nomination of Carter Glass to be secretary of the treasury was sent to the senate. Glass declined to comment before confirmation, saying it would be presumptuous. Friends say he accepted reluctantly and showed little enthusiasm. On the house floor he answered roll call as 300 representatives applauded.
The jury in the Condit versus Public Savings Insurance Co case was instructed by the court to return a verdict for the defendant after the evidence was heard on Wednesday.
Ora Whitehouse, held in custody after an escape from an orphans home investigation, escaped jail by crawling through a dumb waiter used to pass food to inmates. He was recaptured on a street hours later.
Beginning Monday Dec 16 the banks of Princeton will close at 3 oclock in the afternoon instead of 4. The change aims to give staff time to finish daily work and benefit the public. New hours are 9 AM to 4 PM and other county banks may adopt the same schedule.
Dec 5 report says several hundred thousand Germans are under American control and accepting the situation with quietness. Locals carry on as factories hum and trains bring supplies to Treves while decrees order surrender of arms and ammunition. Some Germans voluntarily surrender weapons.

Gibson county forms local Roll Call, targeting broad enrollment with no additional war fund drive. H. P. Davison notes Roll Call foundations for future Red Cross service and calls for unified American support.
The Princeton Elks lodge will host its annual Christmas treat for every child in Princeton despite influenza and higher candy prices. A meeting at Ben Hur hall set committees to organize the event with a change gathering children in the courthouse corridors due to the Elks home serving as an emergency hospital. The project remains inclusive regardless of race or finances.
George Powers, wounded in France, is brother of Mrs. Elmer Montgomery who lives west of the city. Letters indicate he is recovering. Powers enlisted in June 1917 and has been in France since June this year.
United Press Draff Correspondent Robert J. Bender sails with President Wilson aboard the George Washington to France to report the peace conference. He is the accredited representative of the United Press Associations, with one man from each press group designated to cover proceedings and relay first hand information to Democrat readers.
Bonds for incoming county officers including Stanford Witherspoon as treasurer and George B. Allen as recorder were approved. Sureties include many prominent locals with bonds ranging from 100 000 to 4000 dollars. Also, influenza cases in Gibson County show over 400 fewer cases in November versus October and the health report notes a shift to milder illnesses.
London newspapers insist Wilson’s presence at the Paris peace conference is essential. The Telegraph says his mission ends U.S. aloofness while The Times notes allied governments want his personal counsel and regard his trip as a meaningful sacrifice by Americans.
