In Landling Kansas on December 5 authorities pursued 13 convicts who escaped from the state prison eight miles east of Leavenworth. Bloodhounds tracked a large wooded marsh area as posse members guarded the perimeter. The lapse was discovered after the convicts left the prison walls and found 13 vacant spots at supper, indicating a tunnel escape.
Prof. A J Foley of Indiana University urges relocating locomotive whistles to the front of engines and using a single high pitch. He claims this would cut coal use by about 2.5 million tons yearly and save thousands of lives by reducing noise confusion at crossings.
A rope in a Leeds coal mine broke on Monday causing cars filled with miners to plunge to the shaft bottom. Forty men were reported killed or injured in the accident.
The Gibson County Tuberculosis Association fundraiser by D. F. C. girls netted 240 dollars from a house to house drive for Christmas Seals. James Thomas Shaw, 24, held at Michigan City prison for safekeeping after arrest for murdering Mrs. Tryelen Welchel in Indianapolis. Police report circumstantial links include tire print and car flood stains matching Shaw’s auto, and a diamond ring found with a colored woman who said Shaw gave it to her.

In Scranton Pa on December 35 a Jersey City newspaper man and his wife identified a skeleton found in a swamp near their New Jersey home as their missing son Jimmy Glass. The child vanished eight years ago from Greeley Pennsylvania. Shoes with the maker’s trademark matched the boy's. Police aided by Captain Rooney. Authorities believe the boy wandered off after a pet dog and drowned.
Mrs. M. J. Geddis of Mt. Carmel has been a guest of her son Frank Geddis and family and returned to her Mt. Carmel home Saturday.
A weather note for Indiana shows rain likely tonight with clearing by Tuesday morning. Sunday’s forecast records a high of 61 and low of 41, with partly cloudy conditions and a 6 am temperature of 38. Sunset is 4 50 pm and sunrise tomorrow is 6 50 am.
The state highway commission leases the Ingle dairy barn between Winslow and Oakland City to serve southern Pike county. Built by Ingle company at about $30,000, the two story concrete structure will house a repair shop on the upper floor and truck storage on the lower. Once remodeled, the Winslow depot will move to this new site.
Mrs C. 3. Shuel and two children returned to Evansville from a Thanksgiving vacation with Mrs Shuel’s parents Mr and Mrs Dan McDonald in West Pine Street.
Gov Warren T. McCray was arrested today on indictments from the Marion county grand jury. The capias was served by Sheriff George Snider and special investigator Claude Worley. McCray posted $25,000 bond and was released. He was in James Noel's office when arrested. arraignment is unset.
Mayor C. A. Niemeier married Ernest Jordan and Dorothy Terry, 22 and 17, after they failed to find a minister in Princeton. The ceremony at the city building was brief, with the mayor noting others had the right to wed, and the couple plans to live in East Mt. Carmel where he farms.
Broshears, an insurance agent who vanished from the city last Wednesday, arrived at his Evansville home Sunday afternoon in a crazed, nearly blind state. He traveled from Nashville via unknown helper, was treated by a local doctor, and urged to stay still for four days before returning to Princeton to resume his collections. A possible robbery and poisoning motive is suspected, with the caller claiming the husband was located in Nashville and asking for money.
Andrew Lockhart a 19 year old from Pontiac Mich was brought to the county jail by Sheriff John Hollen. He is held for arraignment on a burglary charge from two years ago involving the Kings Station School. He previously escaped from jail through a cell hole.
Vanderburgh Probate court in Evansville opened a motion for a new trial in the alienation of affections case brought by Mrs. Ethel Crum of Indianapolis against the Montgomery family of Posey county. The jury awarded $25,000 to Mrs. Crum from T Wilbur Montgomery Chester Montgomery and Stella Montgomery. Defendants argue the record is faulty juror competency and trial rulings.
The Cosmos Club plans a Wednesday afternoon gathering with Mrs 8 K Trippet on West Walnut Street at the usual hour.
Washington December 3. The 65th Congress opened under tense air with factional clashes between Republicans Democrats and a western progressive bloc threatening to block house organization. Rep Longworth and Rep Nelson led the block as the roll call began and Speaker election was contested. In the Senate Senator Cummins presided while death acknowledgments paused business and Whitman chosen for Senate presidency with Gerry re-elected whip.
Haubstadt Indiana December 3 A Ku Klux Klan parade and speaking were held Friday night. Saturday Pastor H Mahan of the Christian church received by mail an $80 donation from the Gibson County Knights for the Ku Klux Klan of Johnson township to be used as the pastors and members see fit.
Thomas Brothers sue Minerva Brothers for divorce on grounds of inhuman treatment. The defendant recently filed a divorce action against Thomas Brothers on the same grounds.
