Work on the Patoka river ditch from Winslow to Wheeling in Pike and Gibson counties began mid 1921 after a 1915 petition. The dredge and drag line now near meeting, reducing a winding fifty mile channel to about seventeen miles. Cost stood at 576703.16 with 125546 paid by property owners and a 447596.80 bond issue.
