In Cleveland and Cincinnati area reports, leaders of the Big Four railroad brotherhoods clash over strategy in the shopmen strike. Some urge a 30 day ultimatum to force settlement, while others say lives of workers justify walks, risking a broader strike.
John J. Dowd, head of the metropolitan area strike committee, urges the U S Senate Interstate Commerce Committee to probe the Association of Railway Executives. He accuses a small inner circle of ousting mediation, blocking railroad peace, and pushing for open shop demands amid the shopmen's strike. Railroad leaders declined comment.
Indianapolis August 21. U S district attorney Worner Eliott received a special report on the Princeton situation after the Southern railroad canceled several trains. Walter Lewis of the Bureau of Investigation was sent to Princeton and Evansville to probe causes. No action or recommendations were disclosed by Mr. Elliott.
In Jackson California on August 20 the Argonaut mine trapped 43 miners a mile below surface after a blast and fire. Rescue crews battled fire and gas as wives and children watched, hoping for survivors while teams tried to reach the 3,600 foot level and open a 600 foot tunnel from the Kennedy mine.
Miss Edna Lowry announces retirement as city schools art instructor after a decade in Princeton beginning 1912. She will join Oakland City College faculty, having contributed to plays pageants parades and public events with notable decorating and teaching work.
Announcement of completion of a deal shows Thomas H. Riggs of this city purchasing the Mack Bottom grocery at Water and Gibson streets. A residence on South Prince Street was also involved. Bottom could not confirm future plans and Riggs was out of town. operator for the store remains undetermined.
Twelve guards removed from the yards at the Southern shops were sent to the Southern passenger station Monday afternoon. Police Chief Fettinger and Patrolman Elliott accompanied one vehicle carrying six guards. The move follows a weeks of unusually calm conditions, with precautions in place.
Coroner M L Arthur of Patoka holds an inquest today into the death of John Berry a city contractor who was shot and fatally wounded last Saturday night by Arthur Spencer both colored. Witnesses examined in the coroner’s office with Prosecutor James Robinson presiding Grace Ferguson and Olive Owensville were Princeton visitors today.
Doyle Gayer, 19, son of John Gayer, pleaded guilty to grand larceny in city court. Bond set at 250 dollars. Gayer returned to city lockup. He admitted taking a gold chain two rings and a gold tie clasp from Mrs Floyd Jerell and claimed to have found the jewelry, later saying his mother warned him.
Eby, long time resident engineer for the South Dakota highway commission at Brookings, has been promoted to constructive engineer with new headquarters at Pierre. Local friends in Princeton, his former home, will be pleased by the advancement.
Henry A. Yeager’s petition to adopt Miss Hattie Clark was dismissed in circuit court yesterday on motion by the petitioner. The ruling ends the immediate petition without prejudice to future action.
Tonight and Wednesday forecast generally fair. High 80 and low 57 degrees with clear conditions. Last year on the same date saw a high of 89 and a low of 69 with clear skies. Sunset at 6:25 p.m. and sunrise at 5:17 a.m. tomorrow.
The Tip-Top Creamery Company plans a brick and cement plant on west Emerson Street Princeton with 12% feet frontage and 148 feet depth to manufacture ice cream butter and milk. President John A Riseh leads with 17 years in the field while F C Bell handles Princeton operations and Chas G Taylor secures chamber support. Construction to start soon with aim to open in a few months.
Morning and afternoon sessions filled with expanded attendance at Princeton High School auditorium. Addresses by Drake University’s W F Barr and Evansville College president Alfred F Hughes highlighted a high quality program. Musical numbers by Ruth Ervin Blanche Trippett Dorothy Mae Lawrence and baritone Trea Leucking drew acclaim amid devotional and dramatic events.
Chicago Aug 29 The labor board denies using the living wage as a basis for a new wage scale for maintenance workers. The board says it will not go beyond the transportation act and will adopt the living wage only if legally justified. President Grable of the maintenance men sought delay to study the decision.
Lydia Mauck Smith wife of James Allen Smith dies at home in Owensville after a long illness from tuberculosis at 4 15 am. She is 67. Survived by husband two daughters Mrs Geo Clark and Mrs Eliza Dorsey two sons H O Smith and Byrd Smith a brother Thompson Mauck and several step siblings. A Cumberland Presbyterian church member. Funeral plans not announced.
Virgil Akers, 24, pleaded guilty to a string of bad checks in southern Indiana. He received a two to 14 year state reformatory term and a $200 fine plus costs. Akers admitted guilt and implicated Lillie Slater Young, whose arrest in his company may help her case. Deputy Sheriff Compton is credited with tracking him for over a week.
Bids for an auditorium seating 1200 and a fully equipped gymnasium addition to Princeton high school were opened by the city school board. The general contract bids ranged from 26,658 to 38,083 with Sickles of this city the lowest at 52,056. Heating bids came from Gottman Weber Evansville at 4,567 and V C Smith at 4,606 with a combined heating and plumbing bid of 8,950. The project aims to convert the present facilities into classrooms to handle rapidly growing enrollment.
At the Rotary noon meeting the Educational Men were guests, including County Supt. Ben Watt and his institute assistants Dr. Barr of Des Moines, Floyd Loper former Princeton principal, and Evansville College President Hughes. Evansville visitors Sheppard and Al Sevringhans attended to invite members to the intercity meeting Sept 9 with Rotary International President. Kiwanis invite accepted for Sept 20 joint meeting. A children's play-ground committee was appointed.
All Girl Scouts interested in helping at the Baby Clinic at the fair next week should meet at Supt Watt's office Wednesday after noon at 4 o'clock sharp. County nurse Miss Edith Ross will attend to explain duties.
Mr and Mrs Harry Soller left this morning for Rochester Minnesota where Mr Soller will undergo treatment. Mrs Bart Skelton and son Tah Fartay went to Mt Vernon Illinois to visit. Mrs Skelton's mother Mrs Nate Apgar and Mr and Mrs A J Littrell of Hazleton were here enroute to Winston to visit Mr Luttrell's parents Mr and Mrs W H Luttrell.
