The Dry Goods Economist notes a scramble by retailers to buy stock of kid and fabric gloves from limited import stock. Prices have risen 25 to 100 percent with none available at any price. About one sixth of gloves delivered so far with no more due. The shop offers 200 pairs of Women’s Royal Kid Gloves in Saturday sale at usual price.
The store touts Royal gloves for women at one dollar, noting stable sales for 25 years. Although they could fetch 1.25 elsewhere, they offer a final lot at the current price with a warning that no more will be available after this batch. A warning to shoppers closes the ad.
A brief ad notes summer dresses priced at 1.98 dollars at The Fair Store. The text shifts to rhetorical musings about politicians and a hungry horse, then champions standing up for a merchant marine and continuing the war until fighting ends.
Vienna reports Austria formally declares war on Belgium and hands passports to the Belgian ambassador as Germany plans joint operations. Paris says war has spread to the Belgian Congo frontier as German forces attack. Louvain is reported burned as reprisals amid a wider European conflict.
The Central Labor Union approves a Labor Day program in Princeton featuring a 9:30 parade with an estimated 2000 participants, a noon barbecue at the fair grounds, afternoon races, multiple bands, a ball game between Princeton Champs and Rockport nine, and an evening speaker program and concert. Berlin August 26 Emperor Wilhelm telegraphed from the front directing immediate relief for Prussian refugees driven by the Russian invasion. The Kaiser says they should be cared for inside German lines until the invasion is checked and they can return home. Energetic steps and reserve reinforcements are being rushed to meet the Russian advance. Germans expect a general battle once the army meets the first fort line.
U P staff reports German infantry drives Allied forces back along the French frontier. Despite massive losses, the war office says there is no undue alarm as German assaults are described as enormous and continue toward Paris. Ed L Keen files from London.
Paris faces growing siege fears as war officers insist defenses hold from Verdun to Sedan with heavy artillery entrenched. German forces push into France near Longwy while bridges on the Meuse are destroyed. British and French detachments guard the north with Cambrai as base and cavalry repels raids in Pas-de-Calais and Arras.
The war office said the British army holding Maubeuge has been defeated and the French Belgian armies operating against Namur have been routed. Losses were heavy but no battle date was provided.
