Five Die in Haubstadt Train Car Tragedy
Five people were killed and a sixth seriously injured when a northbound New Orleans Limited train struck a Ford touring car near the Haubstadt depot. James W. Burris, 27, and his family, including two children and his sister in law, were among the deceased. Mrs Burris survived with serious injuries. Dredge Boat Ready for Work
After a year building the dredge to start on the Paroka river the vessel was floated Wednesday. A dam around the boat and a rotary pump began throwing water into the lake as the dredge work started Thursday. Fred C. Indianapolis August 26 The state emergency coal committee will rely on Indiana mines to cover the state’s needs rather than await federal distribution. Chairman John W McCardle said most mines should operate by week’s end and hoped operators would not charge more than four dollars per ton. Transfusion of Blood Fails to Save Life at Lake Forest
Delavan Smith publisher of the Indianapolis News dies after a relapse following blood transfusions. He had been ill at his summer home since 1917, suffered anemia, and remained conscious at bedside until the final minutes. Born December 28, 1861 in Cincinnati he led the Indianapolis News for years.
