Miners abandoned their invasion of Mingo county coal fields after union officials persuaded them to desist. President Kenney of District No. 17 and Secretary Mooney intercepted the advance guard at Madison West Virginia and urged the mass gathering of more than 7,000 to stop, warning of disaster and loss of life if the march continued.
A first bullet exchange occurred in Williamson as miners marching through Logan county met civilians armed to deter invasion. The sheriff said only a frontline group of miners engaged and there were no injuries.
Reports at noon say marching miners entered Logan county with scouts warning county authorities to resist. Sheriff Don Chaffin ordered final preparations for a fight as miners were sighted nine miles east with passes guarded by rifles and machine guns.
From Charleston Aug 26 a force of 5000 coal miners marching toward Mingo county and a 4000-strong sheriff’s volunteer guard edge toward a tense frontier. Reported gear includes rifles and a seized machine gun as both sides prepare for possible confrontation.
A Princeton Rotary and Kiwanis committee arranged temporary access around the sunken bridge site south of Princeton. State Highway officials initally halted work, but the temporary pass-way should be open by Monday, with detour routes avoiding the Poor Farm road. The new bridge will use two six by eight foot concrete boxes on piles to form a 6 by 16 foot open waterway.
Jamie L. Sevedge and Robert W. Endicott have been awarded Gibson County Tea scholarships at Purdue University for the 1921 1922 academic year.

In Indiana near Warsaw and Winona Lake Lieut Merrill and Jack Rodeheaver, 18, half-brother of Homer Rodeheaver, died when their plane overturned after Merrill reportedly reached for a control. The craft flew inverted for a distance before crashing. Rodeheaver died at the scene and Merrill died later. The wreck, owned by Homer Rodeheaver, had apparently intact controls.
A telegram reports the death of Mrs. Maggie Hutton wife of the late John M. Hutton former Vincennes resident. She was the widow of the late railroad baggage master John M. Hutton. She is a sister of Mrs. J Alic Gardner of South Prince Street and a relative of Mrs. John Timage of East Broadway. The body will reach Vincennes Saturday afternoon and be placed in Greenlawn Cemetery. Relatives from Princeton will attend the funeral.
Grammier of Headey gon Kentucky and Darrell Carter Brayaville were married in the afternoon service led by Rev. C. A. Wade at PIB West.
County Clerk Harlen L. Kays says a one and a half mile south of Oakland City a million dollar health and pleasure resort will be built by a St Louis syndicate led by Otis Wilson and Kays. The McCullough Springs site on 180 acres will host a modern hotel golf pool and baseball park around three springs with capacity for 2500 daily water supply and future expansion to attract thousands of visitors.
In Washington on August 26, officials note Congress did not enact the Willys Campbell anti beer measure, so Treasury Department regulations governing distribution will not be issued. No memorial beer is planned as a result.
Heinz factory manager R. D. Porter reports an inability to hire enough workers to handle a large tomato crop. He notes good conditions and sanitation but says there is no response to employment calls. The plant could fill 75 to 1000 positions for women and girls.
The Gibson county teachers' institute closes after a successful session in Princeton. Professors Lasher and Johnson of Michigan depart, with Johnson especially enjoying early Princeton history and Lincoln boyhood facts. Lasher distributed English language booklets on correct usage.
American forces will remain on the Rhine until the new treaty is ratified by both the United States Senate and the German Reichstag, likely in September. The move preserves the current status of relations between the two countries as the government disclaims league commitments.
Hull England Aug 26 three more bodies were brought up by divers today from the wreckage of the ZR-2 which fell into the river Humber Wednesday. One body identified as Alfred Laughlin of Alabama among the 16 Americans the other two British crew members. A crane will be sent to raise the mass of girders and frame work.
German centerist leader Matthias Erzberger is reported murdered in London after a period of political turmoil. The event shocks Europe as authorities investigate the suspected assassination amid rising extremism.
The Sinn Fein rejected the British peace proposal, with De Valera stating the offer was rejected and the door still open. Lloyd George warned progress needed toward settlement terms as Downing Street awaited the Dail Eireann response. De Valera was re elected president of the Irish republic by the Dail at Mansion House.
A large crowd is expected at the Winslow ball park Sunday as the Winslow Tigers meet the Fort Branch Studebakers in the deciding Sevies game. The series stands two games apiece after five games, with Winslow at home and Fort Branch winning on the road. Ross Dark of Vincennes will start for Fort Branch, joined by Meiser and Reese. Ulrich will start for Winslow with Warren on the mound and Hume slated to relieve. The game is set for 2 45.
