Washington Aug 25. German army captured 10 000 French soldiers and several generals from the forces under General Joffre and advanced from Longwy and the Belgian frontier. Crown Prince’s army moved west of Longwy. Meuse line toward Maubeuge. many guns and prisoners taken. Belgium border largely in German hands. Austria declares war on Japan. formal note served at Tokyo.
Washington dispatches report the Allies failed an offensive and had to retreat as German forces, massed in bulk, outweighed the west. The French army division fared poorly though the bulk remained in good condition. German losses are said to be high amid the setback and Paris officials offer cautious optimism.
