New York Aug 24 The Big Four brotherhoods and railway presidents mediated but could not end the strike. Bert Jewell head of the shop crafts refused to grant separate peace agreements, leaving negotiations to Jewell after a conference with railway leaders.
Bulletin from Washington says President Harding will take no further action to mediate the railway labor dispute. In New York a conference of railroad leaders and a minority of presidents failed to yield progress on a general settlement of the shop crafts strike. W H Coap, VP of the trainmen, says little was accomplished as 52 carriers met after labor chiefs withdrew. Warren Stone of the Brotherhood of Engineers and mediators reported to Bert M Jewell of the shop crafts.
Warren Stone and other mediators met Bert Jewell as carriers rejected the June 50 status for returning workers. Jewell said no public word was available after the meeting. He declared the strike fighters had accepted the challenge and rejected seniority concessions. Secret talks with executives and Johor reps were planned for a partial settlement, but no separate peace was offered.
Sioux City Iowa August 24 plans for a nationwide railway strike involving at least five million men surfaced after the Louix City Trades Council passed a resolution urging the American Federation of Labor to order a strike. John Shank secretary says the movement began in Omaha and asks every labor body nationwide to act similarly.
The marriage of Miss Nela i Chat son, age 25, and Elmer Hunt age 21, both of Gibson County, occurred at 2 30 o clock Wednesday afternoon at the office of Squire R M Morten.
Miss Ruth Hale aged 18 and Melvin Cleveland aged 21, popular Ft Branch residents, were married Wednesday afternoon at 4 o clock in the office of Squire J M Morton. They will reside in Ft Branch.
Washington reports Ellis Searles editor of the United Mine Workers Journal forecasts a coal shortage this winter. railroads may not haul all mined coal to meet domestic needs and officials must extend rationing or states and cities will act to prevent suffering.
Terre Haute area mines are forecast to reach 60 percent of normal by Friday after 92 percent production is expected to be resumed by next Monday. Miners' trains are operating again, signaling improved output in Indiana.
Mrs. Osman Garwood of Patoka driving a Ford collided with a Buick driven by John Orth foreman of the Southern Machine Shop at the Broadway and Prince street intersection on Thursday afternoon. Both cars sustained slight damage.
J s Mullen chairman of the Engineers and R E Thorp chairman of the Firemen for the Southern division, who were in Princeton this week, returned to Camelton and New Albany where they maintain headquarters to resume their railroad runs. This indicates that all current trouble presiding over them has been settled.
Maggie and William Decker sue Floyd Biggs Alva Levi and Victor Oil and Gas for 2500 damages alleging breach of a May 19 1919 written contract to develop their Washington township real estate for oil and gas. The suit claims royalties and advance payments were due and that drilling in 1920 produced gas but payments were not made or deposited, seeking voiding of the contract and damages. Hovey C. Kirk represents the plaintiffs.
Death occurred Wednesday night at 9 45 at the home of her daughter Mrs J F Morgan 624 North Hart street The deceased was 76 widow of I Lands and had suffered fifteen weeks from complications of diseases Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 PM at the Morgan home conducted by Rev C H Flynn pastor of the First Methodist church Burial will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery Survived by three daughters Mrs Morgan Mrs Dora Miley and Mrs D D East of Vincennes Mrs Morgan has lived in Princeton for sixteen years having moved from Alton Indiana since the death of her husband she has resided with Mrs Morgan
Mrs. L K Powell died at her Nashville home on Tuesday. Burial is Friday afternoon in Nashville. She was the adopted daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Tichenor, of Princeton, who were summoned to Nashville. Her husband, Mr Powell, a Princeton native, once served as deputy postmaster under Henry Tichenor. They moved from Princeton after his term. Her death was sudden and illness undisclosed, many local friends mourn her loss.
Denver officials report a claim by Adolph Bummer-Legienberg that Ouray County has formed an independent sovereignty. A statement was sent to Governor Shoup and to foreign and colonial representatives. He says the seizure was forced due to the non existence of law in the county.
A majority of railway executives rejected the brotherhoods mediation proposal to end the nation wide strike by reinstating workers with seniority intact. A minority group of western lines urged individual settlements while maintaining the seniority stance. Leaders insisted no split exists and pledged to pursue a unified policy through the railway labor board for any disputes.
Weather bulletin notes generally fair conditions tonight and Friday in Indiana. It calls for colder temperatures on Friday with a high around 85 and a low near 68, a 1.0 percent precipitation chance. Noon temperature listed at 87 with showers forecast today and Friday, and sunset at 6:32 tonight with sunrise at 5:18 tomorrow.
Indiana coal supply hinges on rail transportation capacity as 147 mines near restart. National Coal Association president A M Ogle says production will wait for repairs, car supplies, and rail service. John W McCardle of the public service commission seeks 100 coal cars from Washington. price capped at $5 a ton. A nonpartisan tribunal for coal operators and workers is urged with WWI era figures suggested.
The Southern Indiana Holiness Association plans the twenty seventh annual camp meeting at Oakland City from August 20 to September 3. Rev. J B McBride Rev R A Young and Ruth Hynemann will conduct services. J W Reid directs music with Mollie Barrett on piano. a large choir and orchestra perform. Arthur Emerson and Maude Yeager issue an invitation to attend.
The G A R Archer post holds its regular meeting Friday at 2 30 PM in the library. Commander R M Morton will preside.
The local strike remains unchanged with only mail trains running from St. Louis to Louisville, crews changing at the passenger station, and shops idle. Officials guard property while Fred C. Lewis of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen met with Southern Superintendent G. B. Fallis to ratify a prior agreement. A return to full service may occur after tomorrow, but no official confirmation exists.
Reported in Dublin Aug 4 as Michael Collins's funeral procession moved to City Hall a sniper shot erupted across the Liffey. The crowd cried and drums played while Collins lay in state. Collins, who had planned to marry Kitty Kiernan, was killed by a rebel bullet. Dick Mol Mulcahy reportedly named commander in chief of the Free State army amid questions on leadership succession.
Washington August 24 The soldier bonus bill unamended sped toward final passage by the Senate today. Although a hard fight was promised by Senator Borah and others, opposition seemed curbed as overwhelming support grew. Opponents favored sending the bill to the president for acceptance or rejection. If vetoed a big fight would follow to sustain the executive view.
George Turnage, a miner at the Francisco mine on West Broadway, broke the second toe of his left foot after a rock fall Wednesday night. The injury was treated by a local physician and he cannot work, though he can walk on the injured foot. Mrs Eliza Carithers and daughter Grace traveled to Newcastle to visit her son Will Carithers.
Federal authorities expanded a nationwide net to capture radicals fleeing Bridgeman Michigan where 17 alleged communists were seized. William Foster head of the Trade Union Educational League was held at the county jail and extradition papers sought to remove him to Michigan. Rose, Pastor Stokes of New York and four other women were also sought. Foster denied links to the convention as his arrest occurred.
The Princeton Advertising club hosted Watermelon Day in the courthouse yard with free large chunks of watermelon for visitors. A big crowd attended while Battery D members handled the melon cutting throughout the afternoon.
Articles of incorporation for the White River Valley Power Co of Princeton were filed in Indianapolis. Incorporators named are Claude E Gregg Charles E Dove H Y Pritchard of Vincennes Harley Clark and J N Canavan of Chicago. It may be a subsidiary of the Indiana Power Co which has an option on Princeton Light and Power Co property to be taken up Sept 1.
Mrs Everett McCormick and her son, who had been visiting Mr and Mrs Grider McCormick east of the city, went to Greenville Indiana today to visit Daniel Aukerman and family before continuing to Milwaukee Wisconsin.
