Washington Aug 23 Plans prepared today by Wombels for General John J Pershing foretell a spectacular reception on his return to the United States The commander of the A E F is set to arrive in New York September 9 or 3 President Wilson may meet him There is talk of a gold sword and a lifetime general rank for Pershing with a congressional resolution of thanks.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 9 to 8 to strike Japan and insert China in the Shantung provision on disposal of Germany’s rights. The move, led by Chairman Lodge, returns the territory to China, with party-line votes from Republicans and Democrats. The amendment is the committee’s first on the treaty as they begin consideration of additional changes.
Within a week the foreign relations committee will report the peace treaty, chairman Lodge told administration leaders. Hearings will be deferred to avoid delay as members begin voting on amendments. A Republican conference preceded the meeting to unite on a program to speed up the disposition of amendments.
US troops press a long border pursuit into northern Mexico seeking bandits who seized Lieuts Peterson and Davis for ransom. Four bandits killed in action, an aviator slain a sniper, plans to base operations south of the border and expand air support.
Washington officials describe a broad effort to oppose Kendrick bills on food control. Tactics include telegrams from district residents without consent, agents urging telegrams at clubs and farmers meetings, targeted newspaper clipping campaigns, and distributing anti-bill booklets and pamphlets.
August 25 report says ANO 00 leaders press for wage increases through Secretary Conlon of the Railway Department and the AFL. They indicate Director General Hines may already have an answer after a conference with President Wilson, the second time this week.

John G. Brown president of the Indiana Federation of Farmer’s Associations rejoined federation officials during a 200,000 guaranty fund campaign tour in Washington. He met with President Wilson and Congress committees to address high living costs and farm production issues.
On August 23 Frederick Ebert took the oath of office as president of the new German republic amid impressive ceremonies marking the transition to democracy. His swearing in followed steps toward a civilian government and stable leadership.
Cleveland Aug 23 William Fletcher manager of the focal branch of Swift and Company is under sentence of 3500 and 3 months imprisonment for violating the cold storage jet. Miss Gertrude Kell visiting her cousin Mrs Dreskell in north Main Street has returned home to Mt Carmel. Mrs Dr Galberth visiting her parents Mr and Mrs J N Knight has returned home to Kansas City.
The local post of the American Legion held its second meeting Friday at 8 pm in the large court room. Forty three ex service men became charter members. plans included committees, a possible post name decision held over, a fair booth at the county fair, and speeches by Lieut. Col. Theodore Roosevelt and J. F. J. Herbert.
Indianapolis Aug 23 Stanley Wycoff federal sugar distributor for Indiana appealed to Washington for five million pounds of sugar to ease an Indiana shortage. He warned the state could lose a million dollars daily in home and commercial farming if shipments do not arrive immediately.
Paris dispatches report a French patrol boat recovered the bodies of three men, believed to be crew from the missing airplane Goliath that vanished after attempting a flight from France to Dakar. The craft has not been heard from since last Saturday. Mayor James Couzens of Detroit is described as possibly the richest mayor, owning 2,180 shares of automobile stock valued at $29,280,020.
The body of Anna Leinbach, 76, found in a garden near an alley in Vincennes Idaho, shows heavy injuries from assault. A lead pipe and cigarettes near the scene, with two or more Black suspects believed involved, and arrests expected today.
County Agent Marshall returns to the Gibson county fair with a new horticulture hall display. A ten by fourteen foot map shows every town and the oil field at Big Joe’s well while Marshall and Townsend explain fertilizer choices and usage. The exhibit aims to inform farmers on what to buy and how to apply it as patrons tour Bartonville and the county map.
Major R S Munford named chairman to gather names and addresses of all soldiers and sailors in Princeton and township for a home-coming event at the Gibson County Fair on Tuesday September 5. Efforts to compile a complete list face gaps as some lists lack addresses and some veterans are overlooked. Ex servicemen urged to leave their details with Major Munford Ed Criswell or John W Corder. A meeting for volunteers to finalize the list will be held in the small court room next Monday evening at 8.
Citizens are invited to a mass meeting in the large court room next Tuesday at 8 pm to select the site for the Gibson County Coliseum memorial. Speakers will include prominent residents and leaders of the Coliseum Board. The meeting aims to involve the entire county in determining the location and ensuring broad support.
