A Brooklyn fire hall tragedy leaves two firefighters dead and about 20 injured when the Plaza Dance House roof and walls collapsed during a blaze. Rescue efforts are ongoing as hundreds witness the crash and chaos, with diggers and hoses deployed under searchlights amid intense heat.
Paris august 21 The French reply to the British reparations note was handed to the British chargé d affaires in Paris this morning. The text will not be published until tomorrow morning.
The Vernon Democrat reports Charles R. Johnson a clerk of Winslow and Pauline Florence Curtis 23 of Winslow as a couple wedded by Judge H J Henning. Ezra Bowman 24 of Fort Branch and Etta May Lambert 17 of Mt Carmel also appeared at the court house with officiation by Judge Henning.
A brief classified notice urges buyers to place want ads in The Daily Democrat to obtain a baby carriage at a small cost. It provides contact numbers 9 and 917 for inquiries.
Indiana Public Service Commission orders Princeton Telephone Co to provide long distance facilities to Haubstadt within sixty days. Lines from Princeton to Fort Branch may be used temporarily to connect Haubstadt, with toll-only service and no free county-wide use. Existing Fort Branch Haubstadt line is in poor condition.
The Columbia State bank’s twenty year charter ends Sept 1 and a new charter is secured under the name The Old State Bank. Business starts Sept 4 with capital 35000, surplus 47000, stockholder investment 42000 and total assets 375000. Officers stay Kell, Galligan, Simon and eight directors including Bell Coleman Williams Whitman.
Thunder showers possible this afternoon or tonight. Wednesday expected to be generally fair and cooler in the east and south. Monday high around 92 and low about 64 with partly cloudy skies. last year similar date saw 90 and 60 with clear skies. Monday 6 am temperature about 73 with .87 inches precipitation likely Monday night. Sunset Tuesday at 6 36 and sunrise Wednesday at 5 10.
James Lucey of Northampton recalls Calvin Coolidge enjoying humor and jokes. Lucey shows a letter in which the president writes he would not be here without him. The shoemaker notes Coolidge’s warmth and contrasts with the era’s silent image, citing a smiling portrait after warding off a coal strike.
Dr John H Oliver of Indianapolis will hold a bone clinic at Methodist hospital from 9 a m to 3 p m Wednesday for Gibson county children fifteen years and under with bone defects or crippling conditions. Organized by the Gibson County Tuberculosis Association under Miss Edith Ross, county nurse, it may offer relief or cures and invites all county physicians to attend and join Dr Oliver for lunch.
Brookville Indiana August 21 1923 a reward of $1000 was offered by Franklin County citizens for the capture of two auto bandits who killed Sheriff Van Camp yesterday while he tried to arrest them in a woods eight miles from Brookville. The reward followed 24 hours of fruitless posses searches. Two suspects arrested at College Corner Ohio were released.
The city council established a five member planning and zoning commission chosen by the mayor and council. Mayor Niemeier announced appointees Claude A. Smith John W. Yochum Dr C T Braselton Arch Sprow I John Eller bush. Council member Dr W T Dorsey and city engineer E E Watts join as members. The Tourist Park committee was authorized to set a contract for a comfort station and to install two signs and four large lights at the park on West Spruce Street. Budget provisions for street and traffic warning signs at city entry roads will be included in September appropriations next year.
Al Spencer's bandits halted a Missouri, Kansas and Texas Pacific passenger train near Bartlesville Oklahoma at midnight. They looted an estimated 20 mail packages, fired repeatedly, and then vanished into rocky country keeping passengers unharmed.
Pansy Thomas and Helen Fern, aged 15 and 16, left Mount Carmel to seek store positions in Princeton. They walked about 20 miles round trip, returning exhausted after a nocturnal incursion. Fern returned home with stories of the trek, while Thomas stopped at her father’s across the river and did not finish the journey.
Thieves broke into George T. Ford store in Fort Branch Indiana early Tuesday and stole about $500 in goods including suits 126 pairs of silk hose neckties shirts and other items. Police believe professionals conducted the job used a duplicate key and fled by auto with suitcases. Ford offers a $50 reward for arrests or return of the items.
Mrs Pat Neal, driver, allegedly pursued and ran down Mrs John McGuire, leaving her near death as mob violence loomed in Eldorado Illinois on August 21. Neal denied intent. officers say she used her car to strike McGuire and hit a tree, with murder possible if McGuire dies.
In Atlantic City on August 21 the anthracite coal conference broke up with stalemate over wage increases. John L. Lewis warned a September 1 mining suspension unless a 20 percent rise for cutters and $2 a day for laborers is granted, and reports said miners might drop the check-off demand if the wage push is met.
Francisco Miners beat Haubstadt 10 to 5 in a messy game with 7 errors by Francisco and 5 by Haubstadt. Shoop allowed 3 hits for Francisco while Dutton conceded 13 hits for Haubstadt. Messersmith went 4 for 5 at the plate as Francisco builds an early lead and holds it before traveling to Patoka next Sunday.
The Princeton Rotary Club heard R. N. Chappell of the Farmers National Bank discuss business methods and customer experiences at a Tuesday noon meeting after the Hotel Pullman luncheon. Guests included Fred Ewing with Fred Wallace and C G Taylor with Wm Klenger. chatter included visits and a note about French Lick in lighthearted fashion.
