Reports say the White Star liner Arabic, with 436 aboard, was torpedoed near Fastnet and sunk in minutes. Salvage steamer rescued 11 boats' occupants. conflicting dispatches left unclear casualties though most were believed saved. The incident follows the Lusitania sinking.
Reported deaths exceed 109 across the Texas coast as a savage hurricane lashes the Gulf region. Virginia Point, Morgans Point, LaPorte, Port Arthur, Seabrook, Freeport, Texas City, Sylvan Beach, Balveston, Lynchburg, Houston, and Galveston suffer heavy losses. Hotel collapse near New Orleans adds to fatalities. Damage runs high along Seawall Boulevard with numerous homes toppled.
The Gibson County Teachers Institute convenes at the high school Monday morning for a week of lectures and programs. Distinguished instructors include Prof. W. H.
