A welcome and reception for Gibson County colored servicemen from the late war will be held at Lyles Station Church this evening. The program includes music and literature. All colored service members in the county and the public are urged to attend.
Church schedule this week includes Monday night parliamentary law discussion at 7 15, Bible study Tuesday at 7 45, prayer meeting Wednesday at 7 45, sewing circle Thursday afternoon, women's missionary circle Friday 2 30, Sunday school teachers meeting Friday 7, choir practice after, and Saturday night prayer for next day services.
Paducah Ky Aug 18 Lieutenant Memphis and S Rees Campbell reporter for the Commercial Appeal were killed when their army exhibition plane fell near the country club Friday night at 7 30 The pilot tried a third loop but lost control The two men were fatally injured and their bodies were badly battered.
The large tent at State and Prince streets was moved to Southside park today. Evangelist Hofstra will conduct meetings there for the remainder of his stay in the city.
Senate agricultural committee opens hearings on Kenyon and Kendrick packers reform bills. Senator Kenyon declares current profits near treasonable levels and stresses the need for new control while denying intent to injure the packers. He cites FTC findings and unrest as reasons for action.
El Paso Texas reports fifteen thousand dollars for relief of Lieuts Paul Davis and Harold Peterson captured near the border by Mexican bandits on August 10. Cowboys raise funds at Ft Davis and Ft Bliss plans for possible military action without invasion as authorities seek to rescue the aviators unharmed.
The State Department urged the American embassy in Mexico City to secure the release of two U S Army aviators Lieuts Paul Davis and Harold Peterson held for ransom after being captured near Candelaria Texas while patrolling the border. Officials warned that the bandits threatened death if the ransom isn t paid today and directed consular and Juarez actions to protect the officers.
Washington reports say states will act to force hoarded food to market as Congress debates food control reforms. Palmer orders district attorneys to enforce the food control law, with seizures already under way in St Louis Chicago Kansas City San Diego and the south.
Cleveland Ohio August 18 300 representatives of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers announce a wage scale with average increases of 50 percent and automatic devices including coal passes grate shakers. The demands will be submitted to Director General Hines after revision. Firemen and hostlers seek 35 to 65 percent raises with an average near 50 percent. Officials estimate railroads would incur 200 million dollars to install the automatics and operating costs would rise about 70 million.
The Senate judiciary committee on August 18 unanimously favorable reported the nomination of A Mitchell Palmer for attorney general. Palmer currently holds the office pending a formal transfer after the Tecess appointment.
The Gibson county fair association announces Uncle Sam will oversee a large war display at the fair with captured German implements, rifles, machine guns, helmets, trench knives, and army blankets. Evansville recruiting station will explain items and seek enlistments. The exhibit is free and open under the supervision of Uncle Sam's boys near the main gate.
Charles Crawford alias Cole, accused in the murder of William B. Angel, is willing to plead guilty and tell his side as soon as possible. He is under close watch at the Jeffersonville reformatory, with six weeks to prepare his story before trial in Floyd county. Logsdon and Margaret Tarquet allegedly aided the plot. Tarquet to be tried August 8 in New Albany. funeral for Engel set for tomorrow. W C Ritchie injures a finger while playing ball for the Princeton Giants.
More than a hundred automobiles took part in Gibson County’s live stock display led by County Agent Marshall. Tours covered Herefords, Short horns, Poland China hogs, and dairy stock with visitors from several counties, a dinner at Princeton Fair Grounds, and speeches by stock owners and area officials.
A large audience filled the First Methodist Church and adjoining Sunday school room for a Welcome Home service honoring soldiers and sailors from the late war. The program featured prayers, hymns, readings, and remarks by Attorney Sanford K. Trippett and Major Roderick S. Munford, with several veterans present. Francis A. White presided over the event.
Washington reports a sale of a million dollars of army food begins today via parcels post at 50,000 post offices nationwide. The sale runs through August 20 with hopes to dispose of all food. Justice officials eye potential seizure of food and Palmer weighs disposal of seized stock.
