United Press dispatch from Moscow reports Bolshevik forces pushing to within five miles of Warsaw. Fighting rages along the eastern approaches as Russian lines swing halfway around the Polish capital.
Berlin wireless reports one hundred thousand Bolsheviki troops in the army attacking Warsaw from three sides, as of today. The figure underscores the scale of the campaign described from London.
The war office reported a great battle across the Warsaw front with ongoing Polish and Russian attacks and brutal hand to hand fighting. The city saw hours of audible fighting and skies around Warsaw glowed as fires raged, while wounded stream from the front and medical facilities prove inadequate.
William Jackson owner and operator of the Ft Branch coal mine plans roughly 40000 in improvements. Polk Gennung Polk have been awarded a 4200 brick smoke stack contract to be 112 feet tall. Additional projects include a new wash house and a new office building.
Posey county fair returns to New Harmony this week with the usual Gibson county attendees expected.
The annual Geise reunion took place Sunday at Fred Hassel brink's home six miles southeast of the city with about fifty guests. A basket dinner was served at noon. Out-of-town attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Burton and family and Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Burton and family of East St. Louis.
In County Cork a volley during an attack on ten soldiers guarding an airplane left one soldier and four Sinn Feiners dead. The incident occurred in Dublin reporting on the clashes across the region.
Rear Admiral Huse in command of the Pittsburgh ordered to the Baltic to protect American citizens as Bolshevik forces push on Poland. The Pittsburgh will accompany a destroyer. The navy will send the battleship St Louis and six destroyers to the Adriatic.
A blaze in Chicago early today killed a woman and injured two men as three houses burned. Two girls were rescued by citizens using ladders to reach the flames.
Dr. and Mrs. A. R. Burton and daughter Blanche, with Sam Redman, returned Saturday after a two week, 1500 mile auto tour. They began in Princeton and proceeded to Hannibal Missouri where niece Jeannette Courtney joined them. They visited Iowa Wisconsin central Illinois and paused briefly at Chicago and Indianapolis. Dr Burton reported good fishing in northern lakes and described the trip as very pleasant.
Transportation problems livestock census stock yards and marketing conditions to be discussed by the Indiana Federation of Farmers Associations livestock committee in Indianapolis on Aug 16. Members include George F. Two of eleven navy seaplanes on a San Diego to San Francisco flight failed to report by Saturday night. Four others lost bearings in fog and reached the sea twenty miles north of the Golden Gate. Two destroyers were dispatched to search for the missing aircraft.
The day recorded a high of 82 and a low of 63 with 1.82 inches of precipitation. Compared to last year, the high was 97 and the low 68. Clear conditions prevailed.
Mr and Mrs C M Battles travel to Evansville today after the death of Mr Battles father Frank Battles. Funeral services are planned for Tuesday afternoon at the old home in Veipen. Mrs Battles died in April and since then Mr Battles has lived with his daughter Mrs Jacob Baker in Evansville.
The air dome hosts a camp meeting with rising attention as Rev. Mr. Rebolt preaches a stirring sermon on God’s Eternal Purpose at morning service. In the afternoon Rev. Mr. Crowell delivers a address on his view of glory and destiny.
In Cleveland on August 16, the joint scale committee granted day workers a raise matching the 27 percent given to pick men, after miners charged unequal treatment by President Wilson's board. Operators rejected other miner demands including a $2 daily raise and tonnage increases, and the $1 daily strike fine. Retroactivity of the increases was not decided.
SUUSETT Loyal Women's class of Broadway Christian church plans a picnic Tuesday afternoon in Heston's grave with 3:42 car departure and baskets. Members and children invited. Also notes include porch party hosted by Miss Rachel Morrow on North Main Street with out of town guests, and Washington Township Thursday club meeting at Mrs. George Decker's home with health talks, debates, readings, and new memberships. Starnes Stock Company arrives for a week at West Broadway theater with a four act comedy When Night Falls Tonight.
Cecil Sharpe aged about 19 and Victor Black aged about 19 were found mangled after an east bound freight ran over them near Muren. Witnesses saw them alive 45 minutes earlier in Muren in good spirits. Authorities investigate possible foul play and motive, with local officials and the Sharpe family seeking answers.
RF and AM announce a Monday meeting on August 16. Kilmartin serves as secretary. Local attendees urged to attend and participate in scheduled discussions.
American runners dominated the day in Antwerp with Charles Paddock of Los Angeles winning the 10-meter dash and the U S team taking second, fifth, and sixth in the program. A world record fell as B S Loomis of Chicago clocked 54 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, with John Morton of San Francisco second and A Desch of Notre Dame third.
Fred J. Hall retires from Hall & Son and hands the business to Robert Hall and Charles Hall. The firm becomes Hall Bros. with Robert and Charles proprietors, continuing the family grocery in the same State and Main building after remodel.
Mr. and Mrs. Isaiah Wade near St. Louis Crossing celebrate over seventy two years of marriage. He is 93 and she 94. They lived much of their lives in Bartholomew county and still work at home. They are parents of four children including twins aged 60.
All committees for the lrst district Democratic rally meet tonight in the big court room at 7 30. Governor Cox the Democratic presidential nominee speaks at the fair grounds Wednesday August 25 and final arrangements are being completed.
Mrs Georgia A Carter Patoka died Sunday morning about 7 30 at the home of her daughter Mrs Rev Adame. Death due to stomach trouble. Funeral party will leave Patoka for the service and burial.
The suit by Roberta G Watts against Patoka Wabash levee petitioners was withdrawn in Gibson circuit court. Judge Vandeveer will review the final report and assessments after October objections, with construction to follow once approved. Supporters say levee will protect thousands of acres of prime land from floods.
Judge S L Vandeveer presiding over Gibson circuit court for eight years, performed a surprise marriage for Will Robinson and Maud Perry of Louisville after arriving by Westbound Southern train. He had vowed not to marry couples to avoid breaking his pledge to ministers and justices of the peace, but consented to the hurried ceremony. George Turnage, ill at West Broadway residence, is reported to be improving.
