About thirty five roundhouse men including tire knockers and engine supply workers left their jobs at T o'clock in a sympathy strike aligned with the oilers and firemen who walked out July 17. Only hostlers remain on site as others join the stoppage related to a division chairmans order from Evansville.
President Fairfax Harrison of the Southern Railway System broadcasts via telegram that the company will employ outside men to run the road after efforts to resolve the labor dispute failed. He pledges protection for current workers, appeals to employees patrons and citizens to support the road, and warns of aggressive actions if necessary. The message notes the company has offered every inducement and previously extended terms.

Cleveland Aug. 1 8 A tentative wage agreement among miners and operators in six states Pennsylvania West Virginia Michigan Illinois and Ohio reportedly would end the nation wide coal strike effective April 1 next year The plan includes the 1921 wage scale and renewal of the checkoff system with union dues deducted from miners pay envelopes The total tonnage involved was about 60 000 000 tons and two major interests withdrew from talks over non arbitration by leaders of the miners’ side
Official spokesmen announced that operators representing about percent of the tonnage would sign the agreement agreed at Cleveland. The statement comes from the United Mine Workers headquarters in Terre Haute Indiana.
In Cleveland talks an agreement aims to bring nonmembers into the fold as Deep Vein Coal Company and Tagle Francisco mines align. Ross Jackson of Ft Branch notes work will start there once the strike ends though Ft Branch operates independently.
