Ohio Governor Davis and Michigan Governor Groesbeck said breakthroughs near as the joint scale committee resumes negotiations with President John L. Lewis to end the coal strike. Indiana operators report staying firm while Cleveland talks hinge on arbitration and potential state mediation.
United Mine Workers district headquarters in Terre Haute outlined steps for Indiana operators to reopen mines based on Cleveland conference agreements. If an agreement is reached, a copy will be sent here, operators sign, and local union officials are notified to prepare and resume work.
The Senate voted 24 to 19 to modify the flexible tariff plan. The President would gain authority to raise or lower rates, expiring July 1, 1924. Support came from 18 Republicans and all Democrats. Harding pressed the issue from the White House and in a letter to Finance Committee Chairman McCumber.
Madisonville Ky July 12 A railroad walkout by L and N firemen on the Henderson division halts coal and freight movement and delays passenger service as 18 firemen quit at Arlington with six at Atkinson Junction. State troops and civilian guards remain at Harlington shops amid ongoing tension.
Barney Phillips of Union was arrested by a Pike county deputy and taken to Petersburg after an alleged assault on Reneer. Reneer, who had borrowed a mower, was stabbed twice in the chest and arm during a dispute at the Phillips home. His condition is listed as serious by two physicians.
Brazil Indiana August 12 state operation of two strip mines near town under military protection will continue through Sunday to relieve state institutions from a fuel famine. Twelve flat cars were placed on a siding with arrangements for imported laborers to work daily. Maj Gen Tyndall commandant of the martial law zone urged workers to greater speed after a conference with Governor McCray in Indianapolis.
Mexico City report says American aviator Irving Davis was arrested by Mexican authorities while attempting to fly across the border near Laredo Texas. Officials alleged twelve cases of whisky were found in the plane and Finance Minister De la Huerta announced the plane would be confiscated. Also notes visitors Mr and Mrs Roy Scott of Owensville staying with Mrs Scott’s parents Mr and Mrs William Barr.
The report notes coal cars moved by Pennsylvania Railroad officials during a strike. Five cars loaded at Stainton were sidetracked near Seeleyville as switchmen refused to handle them. The coal was said to be moved toward Indianapolis for state institutions. no additional mining occurred yesterday.
Kiwanis Club plans bicycle contests for all school grades at the watermelon picnic at the fairground on Wednesday August 16. Prizes will reward winners and promote back to school readiness. Pooch Alvis will ride Speed Demon No 1 and aims for speed sixty times an hour. Quoits and horseshoe pitching are also expected events.
Arthur Griffiths, first president of the Dail Bureau, is reported dead in Dublin. He was a signatory of the Irish treaty and supported ratification. Griffiths led the Dail cabinet after D Valera’s resignation and was seen by many as its strongest leader.
Clarence Dillinger, accused of shooting Owen county deputy Carl Grady near Spencer, Indiana, died by suicide at Mrs Townsend's home in Martinsville after eluding pursuers since Thursday night. Neighbor Saam Kephart said Dillinger claimed Deputy Jack Sheeks aided in the Grady shooting.
Evansville Indiana August 12 The Louisville Henderson and St Louis and the Big Four Mt Carmel division notified shippers they could not accept outbound freight from the Evansville freight house now closed. The L and N line also cited closure affecting operations.
TERRE HAUTE Ind Aug The Indiana Operators Association reaffirmed its stand against taking part in any state settlement or temporary agreement with miners that lacks government appointed arbitration. The meeting drew 90 percent of state tonnage. Secretary Phil Penna cited Indiana tonnage at Cleveland four state conference as 796000 tons annually, not 2.5 million. Operators said they would negotiate to end the strike, refering wage discussions to the scale committee and not committing to last year’s rate. Individual operators could resume operations at the old rate if desired.
William Balzer emerges from a coma as sheriff Neu sel names two assailants who killed Balzer's siblings in a farm house. Posses search the area for the killers, a stolen money clue amplifies suspicion. Balzer’s condition remains critical while the coroner's inquest is delayed pending his recovery.
Leases for drilling for oil in Lost River township were entered on record with the county recorder of Shoals Tuesday by Wheeler and Ryan, an oil drilling firm in the French Lick field. A practical geologist located the new well on the McGrady farm and called the land’s structural formation very promising. Wells will be drilled to at least 3000 feet to reach producing sand as Pennsylvania geologist Asche selected the site after careful investigation.
Mrs D ee Brown and her son Bobby of Velpen Indiana have left Friday night for Akron Ohio to join Mr Brown and establish a new home.
Washington reports say shopmen's leaders will not accept the president's settlement in current form and modifications are expected. Railroad executives, arriving in the capital, reportedly favor the proposal but with recommendations that could amount to a de facto rejection. A 2:30 p.m. meeting with Harding and a 4 p.m. session with executives will finalize their replies.

Dismantling of the old Franklin grade school on the south side is rapidly progressing. The old structure will be razed in weeks to make way for a modern replacement between Prince and Gibson streets. Contractor William L. Toelle began work soon after July 29 with boilers, roof and windows removed and ground prepared for foundation. Completion of the new school and remodeling of the high school plus a gymnasium and auditorium are planned, with the gym and auditorium work to be awarded on August 29.
