An Evansville report says L and N shop workers returned to duty after an inquiry into a strike order. A Birmingham head office inquiry was misrouted during an absence, and a clerk sent a go out order with the chief's name. The chairman later demanded the order.
The welcome home committee for soldiers and sailors held a meeting in the Peoples American National Bank directors' room. About 20 members from across Gibson County attended to form sub committees and report at a future gathering during the Gibson County Fair.
The Soldiers and Sailors Coliseum Board of Trustees met Tuesday afternoon to organize by presenting bonds and electing officers. Dr R A Cushiman is president Sanford Trippet secretary P S Armstrong and H C Heldt vice presidents with R N Chappell treasurer. They plan to invite city officials American Legion members and women’s groups to discuss a memorial building for the county.

Senator Lodge urged in a Senate speech that American independence serves more than alignment with the League of Nations. He warned against meddling in every dispute and argued for maintaining Washington and Monroe era policies while denying isolation. He noted the United States became a world power during the Spanish-American War.

Wholesale dealers report noticeable price declines for vegetables meats and fruits following the government profiteer hunt. Potatoes drop from fifty cents to 3.40 a barrel since July 28 as markets show a downward trend, while major cities see less impact. The Agriculture Department notes producers’ prices rose earlier in the month, with August 1 index figures up 17.2 percent from last year and near 92 percent above the ten year average.
David Hunter Miller, a state department expert, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the League of Nations is a composite plan drawn from American British French and Italian ideas submitted to the peace conference. He attended Paris meetings as a technical advisor and said the British plan led by General Smuts formed the covenant's foundation.
In Washington on August 12 the Senate Agricultural Committee urged changes to present wheat standards after farmer reports warn of heavy losses. The farmers claim hundreds of millions of bushels shriveled last year and insufficient pay above 1.50 dollars per bushel. Millers can repurpose the wheat into higher grade flour for greater profits. Chairman Gronna will present the matter to Julius Barnes of the grain corporation. The committee also argues that discounts on lower grain grades are too large, leaving farmers short of the quality value difference.
At a special meeting the council approved confirmatory resolution Number 2 for sidewalk work on East State Street. No remonstrances were filed before the 7:30 hearing. After 8:00 pm two or three residents presented remonstrances about building walks on East State Street noting street condition and a pasture issue, but the council ruled they were timelimited once the resolution passed. Sidewalks will run along the north side of East State Street from Race Street to Smith Street and the south side on additional sections.

In London the house of commons debated the food bill last night and voted 251 to 8 against the measure. Prosecutions and penalties are proposed but critics call the bill vague and shallow, not addressing profiteering at its root.
Secretary of War Baker said demobilization of overseas combat troops will be complete by late October and announced permanent home stations for regular army divisions. The First Division will be stationed at Camp Taylor with new Khaki universities to be maintained in divisional and permanent camps in the southeastern department. He urged civilians to treat soldiers at these camps like university towns treat students.
The bolsheviki government of Archangel appeals to the Allies not to withdraw. In a public State Department release, it says military, financial and railway support is urgently needed to save northern Russia.
The Roumanian cabinet reportedly resolves not to withdraw Roumanian troops from Budapest. The entente withdraws concessions made in 1916 on Roumania's entry to the war. The allied blockade against Hungary is lifted and American guards are withdrawn from the front.
The cruiser Dragon carrying the Prince of Wales entered the inner harbor at 11 o clock and will land at the government pier at noon. The Dragon was escorted from London by a cruiser and supported by several other ships.
General Pershing will leave Paris on August 18 to visit Rome and key battlefields in Italy. He plans to return via Paris and depart for the United States in the first week of September.
