In a wartime report, Belgium rejects a German armistice request while a German commander vows to unleash the full army against Belgian defenses. Rumors of a naval clash between England and Germany circulate as Austria pledges aid to Germany. French and English forces rush to help Belgium, with French artillery noted as particularly heavy.

Funeral services for Mrs Woodrow Wilson wife of the president will be held Monday afternoon at 2 oclock in the White House east room. Interment will be Tuesday at Rome Georgia Myrtle Hill cemetery where her parents are buried. The private services will be attended by cabinet members relatives and friends with Rev Sylvester Beach and Rev James H Taylor assisting. A special train will take the president and many cabinet members to Rome for the rites. The body lay today in the southwest room overlooking the Potomac river. Page Five continues.

Chicago youths Joseph Tomanek and Thomas Fleming pleaded guilty to robbing Mrs. Rachel Emerson’s Ft. Branch home in June. Judge Vandeveer sentenced them to thirty days in the county jail, noting the boys’ ages under 21, stolen property returned, and offering a lenient lecture to steer them right. Tomanek cited prior jail time in Chicago. Fleming did not share the loot.
Rome reports on August 8 that Italian officials announced Austria has decided to aid Germany against England. The sensational declaration was seen as a major shift, with details continued on the fifth page.
