President Wilson plans to speak to Congress next Friday on the cost of living and outlines proposals for reducing prices. He will seek new laws to combat food profiteers and hoarders, regulate cold storage, and oversee food transportation. licensing interstate corporations is also urged.
A world wide resume by United Press shows Britain spending 450 million dollars annually to hold bread prices and fix meat and sugar prices. France fixes prices and imports food. Canada fixes grain prices. Australia has abundance but struggles to sustain production. Italy spends 19 million dollars yearly to keep prices affordable. Japan urges government to raise prices of food and essentials.
Owensville reports the closing of Gibson Lodge No. 2651 and the disbanding of the Owensville K P Lodge. The building history covers the lodge's half century home, church ties, and the sale of the Messenger Building to General Baptists. Community figures praise the lodge's aims and past deeds.
The Oakland City dairy judging event honors cows judged by the Dosey-Gilson testing group. Winner Beauty owned by Charles Farmer produced 503 pounds of milk with 4.6 percent fat. Nettie owned by DD Steele delivered 1266 pounds milk with 4.2 percent fat. Whitie owned by Claude Thompson yielded 227 pounds milk with 16.5 pounds butterfat.
Corporal Norman Hart arrives in the states on furlough from Camp Sherman Ohio after injuries in France as a motorcycle dispatch rider. He was found severely injured after a night crash and treated in a French hospital before transfer to Camp Sherman. He expects discharge within weeks and will rejoin his unit soon.
The Gibson county commissioners named three trustees for the county memorial coliseum to be built at a cost not to exceed 150000 dollars. Humphrey C. Heldt B N Chappell and Pinkney S Armstrong will serve until 1920 1921 and 1922 respectively. They join two others appointed by the circuit judge to complete the board.
The Tidiana coal field reports increased demand with shipments of 354 572 tons in the week ended July 19 and 386 046 tons for the week ended July 26. Production lags capacity, operates about half the time, and buyers push to fill yards as winter supply worries persist amid ongoing cap shortages.
A Gibson county committee led by Floyd Hull plans a four group Live Stock Tour on August 18. Beef cattle, Durone Jersey and Chester White hogs, Poland China and Hampshire hogs, and dairy cattle and sheep will leave four towns to visit Pure Bred farms. After noon lectures and prizes follow with a basket dinner in Princeton.

He urged government ownership as a first step toward industrial freedom, arguing democracy must extend to industry.

Lieutenant Rumer, former bugler of company M, served in the 25th Infantry and was wounded at Chateau Thierry. He arrived in the United States aboard the transport Finland with his son Char ence Todd. A parade for the Second Division was planned in New York City with 25 000 men marching from Washington Square to Central Park. The Second Division units include the Ninth and Twenty third Infantry and the Fifth and Sixth Marines.
Indiana public service commission orders Indiana traction companies to raise rates to 23 4 cents per mile. The higher charge extends beyond August 10 as labor and material costs have not decreased.
Electrical rain and thundershowers blamed for a fatal accident in Marion Indiana. Thomas A. Ryan was killed when a smoke stack from a nearby building collapsed into his one story frame garage. He was trapped beneath the debris as the stack fell during the storm.
Rumor scattered about a .80-barrel oiler at the Jonathan Byers lease in the new southeast field. Drillers stated this afternoon the hole reaches about 1200 feet with no oil in sight.
Indianapolis hog market quotes show $22 per hundred, down $1 from yesterday. Today’s price is $21.50, down 50 cents, a $1.50 two day fall. Market fears rise as government investigations prompt more hogs to hit the market.
Fred Munocer arrived from Ft. Benjamin Harrison where he received his discharge after several months overseas. Karl Cleveland, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Cleveland, arrived in the states after several months service in France.
J. P. Sinclair of Patoka was badly cut while using a ripsaw at Baldwin Tool Works on the Southern railroad near the fair grounds. He received five stitches and was taken home. doctors do not expect a serious hand injury.
This morning an announcement said the weekly band concert will be played by the Prince on Tuesday evening at 6 o clock in the yard at the Franklin school building in the South Side. It was not stated if future concerts will alternate between the courthouse yard and Franklin school ground.
The transport Fin land docked with 3,525 officers and men from the A. E. F. under Capt. J. B. Hill. Lieut. Com. William q. Rague, Jr. led the burial of a fallen officer. The unit included ammunition train, machine gun battalion, service battalion, and engineers as Second Division troops arrive.
