Washington August 6 President Wilson sits by the bedside as Mrs Ellen Axson Wilson, wife of the president and mother to three daughters, dies at the White House at 5 o clock. Born in Rome Georgia about fifty years ago she suffered chronic kidney trouble and Bright's disease after months of illness. Secretary Tumulty announced the death at 5 05 and the president and daughters inwardly mourn the loss.
Mrs Woodrow Wilson lies at the point of death after four months of illness described as a nervous ailment and Bright's disease. President Wilson tends to duties at the bedside, with daughters and relatives present and physicians in consultation as hope wanes. The public bulletin notes the end could be days or hours away.
London reports Italy refuses to honor pledges to the Triple Alliance and aid Germany with army and navy. British and French warships sweep German shipping, with prizes in British and French ports. German threat of war on Italy looms as Krupp guns and heavy matériel move into action amid Belgian position shelled.
London reports both central banks reduced rates to six percent and in a wartime signal, the move was welcomed as evidence the government expects an early war end. Reports circulated of wounded from German and British forces arriving at various points while the main German fleet avoided engagement in the North Sea.
London reports indicate the Kaiser plans a war move against Italy with an ultimatum that expires at midnight. Italy is urged to honor its pledge and aid Germany or face war, according to Paris dispatches. note continued on eighth page.
