Commander Daniel Desay, famed for stearing ocean greyhounds for Cunard, retires after a storied career. The Lusitania, attacked by war and pursued after New York departure, evaded a lone warship by steering by night with lights out, then reached Liverpool to cheers and a testimonial from aboard a French senator.
Vincennes Aug 4 The Tonglind farm well seven and a half miles east of Hazleton in Gibson county drilled by Bankers and Merchants Oil Co. shows promise as a Hazelton field find. At 1960 feet the well released gas air water, forcing the hoister to move for safety. Night work stopped due to fire risk. day drilling aims to reach another hundred feet to bring in oil. Water and mud upheaval has been frequent since Monday as crews try to salvage gas and oil.
In Chicago Aug 4 Judge Robert Crowe urges grand jury to indict last week racial rioters calling mob rule the worst crime and favoring harsh punishment while addressing the panel.
Ernest Green returns from a Washington hospital furlough to visit sister Mrs. Emma Oldham on south Main street and father Arthur Green in Francisco. Miss Sarah McAfee comes home from Sumner with Mr. and Mrs. Grigsby after a week’s visit.
A $125 horse owned by Ben F Murphy and driven by Ernie Davis was struck by a Buick driven by John Allerellie near Spruce and Embree streets. The horse died after the collision. Allerellie admitted fault. Sheriff Flowers noted Allerellie is an alien enemy resident with a family.
Former Prince Henry of Prussia writes to King George urging delayed trials for the former emperor and accusing Britain of plotting Germanys downfall. He claims allies should face tribunals and argues German spirit will rise to demand recognition.
Announcement states Thomas H. Riggs purchased the Book Shoe Store near the square. It is understood Riggs will close out the stock. Arthur Book, longtime manager, will join Harsh & Chaplin Shoe Co. of Milwaukee as traveling salesman.
The county commissioners met in the office of County Auditor Armstrong and planned to end their session probably Tuesday. Armstrong stated that the three trustees of a memorial coliseum had not been held by the commissioners.
Washington reports President Wilson reviews the cost of living and rail problems after returning from a Potomac trip as Congress drafts bills to curb prices. Bert M Jewell of the AF of L plans to press the president about rail shopmen strikes while Rep Kelly of Pennsylvania proposes seizing hoarded foods and distributing them via parcels post.
President Wilson to resume efforts to ease the high cost of living as Attorney General Palmer's committee prepares a formal program. Aimed items include revival of the food administration, wheat price supports, currency reduction, and licensing of food dealers. Rail workers echo demands for wage rises or price cuts.
Nikolai Lenine says Bolsheviki goal is to drive America and Japan from Siberia. They plan widespread revolution, overthrow peasant landowners, and organize workers into unions. They will use terror to crush resistance.
Vincennes Sun reports Bob Whitstine and James Wriggles pleaded guilty to intoxication. Whitstine paid fines. Wriggles jailed for fifteen days. The column details a risky ether cautionary tale about a home brew called Jake and notes the judges imposed fines and jail time.

In Memphis on August 4 Edward Leach editor of the Memphis Press is sent to jail for ten days for alleged contempt of court over an editorial titled The Shame Of It All. A victory procession with a brass band and 50 auto banners marked the event.
In Washington Aug 4 senators Owen and Ransdell urged prompt ratification of the League of Nations covenant. Owen praised its aims and likened Wilson to a physician, while Ransdell warned that rejection endangers universal peace and could plunge humanity into a newDark age after future wars.
Paris August 4 Vienna correspondent for Agence Radio says Roumanian troops advanced on Budapest and occupied the city despite Bela Kun's downfall. Bela Kun, former Hungarian dictator, arrived in Vienna where he has been interned according to the dispatch.
A fragment notes Miss Myrtle Spain visiting her aunt and uncle northeast of the city while today’s high reaches 92 and the low drops to 10, with the neighborhood family of Charles Keib mentioned.
Aug 4 reports troops quartered after police strike triggers disorder in Liverpool. Soldiers brandished bayonets while tanks and machine guns quell rioters. Two thousand on patrol as tram and omnibus workers strike separately. A destroyer assists in port. Looting hits the American steamer Doringuen with foodstuffs scattered.
In Indianapolis on August 4 Warren McCray or Edward Toner of the Anderson Herald were seen as certain Republican candidates. With Will Hays declining to run the field widened and Lieutenant Governor Edgar D. Bush has already announced. Democratic prospects remained unsettled though Charles A. Greathouse, former state superintendent and current federal board member, was linked to the race.
A Princeton church seeks funds for a large community church to serve 3000 residents. They ask up-town residents to invest at least 10000 dollars, with the church and community raising 20000 more, plus social facilities. Subscriptions welcome on five year terms. Liberty bonds accepted.
