Washington reports President Harding may invoke national emergency powers to place railroads and mines under federal receivership and run them, a move officials say could be used if strikes worsen. Rail executives favor fighting disputes themselves, while advisors warn of greater labor disruption and possible sympathy strikes.
The administration warns it may take severe measures if settlements are not reached in the ongoing strikes. It notes that sympathetic actions by other organizations could become a real possibility if talks fail.
The Indiana finance committee authorized borrowing up to one million dollars to support state coal mining under martial law in Clay county. State officials may deploy thousands more soldiers to protect mines as General Tyndall surveys Rowland Powers company holdings in Green Pike and Clay counties to assess operability.
Washton Aug 5 The Kansas politician Phil Campbell was defeated in his primary bid for renomination. Campbell, a leading old guard figure, was known for stifling progressive measures as a rules committee chairman and as a foe to reform in Congress.

Cleveland reports leaders of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen ordered members in Jeffersonville and Richmond to refuse work if molested by railroad guards. Guards allegedly shot at or intimidated workers and used boxcar numbers as targets. A committee headed for Louisville to probe alleged intimidation by H canal Lexington? drivers.
New York reports drives by eastern roads to end the shopmen strike after Harding peace proposals failed. Roads report new workers and returning strikers, with union leaders noting no real split in ranks. Wall Street views the strike as a carrier victory and watches closely.
Dr A R Burton with niece Miss Jeannette Courtney of Hannibal Missouri Clyde Collins and Roy Burton returned home Wednesday night after a motor trip to Chicago and Wisconsin.
At Camp Knox Kentucky on August 2 Princeton artillerymen in Headquarters Battery 189th Field Artillery scored a fine firing record with 75mm guns. Major Fishback witnessed as Corporals Daugherty and Shanley fired at 2150 yards. Visitors from Princeton reported training with 8,000 Citizens' Military Training Camp enrollees. Princeton units won two regimental ball games, 139th defeating 181st Indiana terete y five to four and 189th beating 50th Field Artillery twenty to two.
In Brazil Indiana martial law blocks workers from Rowland Powers Collieries Co mines. Troops guard access, passes issued to some residents and schoolchildren. A 16 000 round ammunition truck train arrived to support forces as miners were ordered to work under martial rule.
Reorganization of the city school board was completed at a meeting held last night in the office of Attorney Thomas W. Cullen. Mr Cullen was chosen president with Ellis Daugherty as treasurer and Harve Milburn as secretary.
Princeton plans an $72,000 bid package for construction heating and plumbing for the Franklin school. The board faces a $22,000 gap beyond the $50,000 bond issue and may trim non essential extras to cover costs while keeping twelve rooms.
Five imported laborers began work at Rowland Powers coal company at noon in Brazil Indiana. Eight hundred soldiers patrolled the site as twenty more workers arrived and more are due. New hires will be paid seven fifty a day and a crate of dynamite was found near the post with possible linkage to shooters, per Major General Tyndall.
The protracted meeting at the Church of God remains in session and will continue through Sunday. Evangelist W. J. Paxson will lecture tonight on Church History using an illustrated chart with the topic Reason and Revelations set for Friday night.
Master Mechanic W B Bunn reports a Washington telegram from the Southern Railway System stating full accord with President Harding. The note says no new hiring, no injunctions, and that workers may return to former positions under the president's restoration of seniority rights.
Jim McCormick recalls street by street the Princeton business district fifty years ago. He details Tichenor blacksmith shop and Miller livery stable wiped out by fire, Head and Brownlee dry goods, Hallock's drug store, Hallock jewelry, Ben Brownley tailor, and the Mansion House tavern hotel with lower business floors and upper billiard hall run by Dan Miller. The oyster parlor and meat shop occupied ground floor. J J Criswell and kin ran adjacent rooms. The Mansion House hosted many gay events under various managers.
