Reports say England orders mobilization of army and navy with Malta under martial law. German forces, about a million strong, push into French territory while Irish leaders pledge support for England. News prompts widespread rejoicing over French victory.
Western railroads agree to mediation as managers of ninety eight companies accept to arbitrate the wage dispute with railway men. The move aims to avert a potential strike by fifty five thousand employees and centers on the question of increased wages as December advances.
London reports Premier Asquith received by ovation as Sir Edward Grey declares England will fight Germany. Mobilized army and ready navy amid frontiers conflicts with France, Belgium, and Russia. Naval battle in the Baltic and German invasion of Belgium loom as Kaiser’s plans unfold.
Sir Edward Grey announced in the House of Commons that orders for mobilization of the British army and navy had been issued. He urged England to view the crisis through honor and obligation and warned that neutrality would be maintained if the German fleet bombards the northern coast of France. He also called for control of wireless communications for all vessels in British waters.
Paris reports French arms scoring a sharp victory at Petit-Croix. German corps attacked entrenched French defenders whose machine guns mowed down the advance. The Germans charged several times but retreated in disorder, leaving many dead. France took many prisoners and news of the victory sparked rejoicing here.
London reports three German armies advancing toward Belgium, comprising about one million men and 22 army corps. The force moves in three directions as the war widens.
Berlin reports confirm a French army crossed the Alsace frontier ten miles east of Belfort. About seventy five thousand French troops advance with heavy artillery and air scouts as three German army corps move to oppose the invasion.
In London on Aug 3, John Redmond the Irish leader delivered a fiery address in the Commons declaring the government could withdraw all soldiers from Ireland. He asserted Ireland would be defended by its own sons and urged unity with southern supporters standing shoulder to shoulder in the national crisis.
Edward Pielmier of the Princeton Gardens spent Sunday with home folks at Vincennes.
Two 18 year olds Boyd Johnson and Hobart Sullivan drowned while swimming with a friend Denver Lane on the Knox county side of White river four miles northeast of Decker. Sullivan’s body was recovered Sunday evening, Johnson’s Monday morning. Lane escaped after being knocked into a deep hole while a sandbar collapsed. The Johnson boy’s father is William Johnson, a coroner. Funeral arrangements set for Tuesday at the Methodist church in Decker and a double funeral in Vincennes for Johnson and his grandfather.
