The first body of an American soldier killed in France was exhumed at Pontanezeu camp cemetery. Officials expect 100 bodies ready for ships to America by April 5, with the transport Antigone to call at Brest to take the bodies aboard.
The F. J. Henneberger Buick stolen from his south Main Street home was found in Sumner New Jersey after a daytime gun battle Tuesday night. Night policeman Frank Melrose pursued two suspects, one captured, a car fled west, shots fired, many shells found in the abandoned Buick. Deputy Sheriff Hays Bale helped in the search. one suspect taken to Lawrenceville.
A New York report predicts coal prices will jump from one to 125 dollars a ton as operators grant wage increases of about 25 percent. Ten contracts include higher wages, with both miners and operators agreeing today. Coal and ration prices are understood to reflect the adjusted rate.
A 1916 Saxon owned by James Curran was abandoned at the State and Main corner when flames erupted from the hood around 4 PM Wednesday. An overheated exhaust likely caused the fire. A well received recital at the First M E Church in Ft Branch featured piano pupils of Miss Aleene Casey. The program showed Miss Casey’s teaching skill with strong performances. Readings by Mildred Potter and vocal selections by Maurice Wilkinson and Casey added charm.
Physicians and nurses fight to save 22 month old Sack Omert of Summerville the son of Mr. and Mrs John Omert after he drank lye water at home. The child’s mouth and throat are badly burned flesh reportedly hanging in shreds with stomach burns feared. An antidote given at a drug store then the child was moved to the Methodist hospital where early hopes faded but later reports showed some improvement.
In Dover Delaware on April 1 the federal suffrage amendment failed 22 to 9 with three abstentions and one absence. After Mississippi defeat leaders shifted hopes to Delaware as national parties urged ratification to make suffrage constitutional, aiming for a 37th state.
Attorney Claude A. Smith urges attendance at the Evansville April 22 conference to revive the Dixie Bee-Line highway. Gov. Goodrich will speak, with Jines Hemenway and W. B. Holdman among attendees. Dixie Bee highway in Gibson county is reported in good condition despite a hard winter.

The New York assembly expelled five socialist members August Claesgens Lews Waldman Charles Soloman Samuel Orr and Samuel Bewitts on charges of disloyalty after an overnight debate.
