Paris reports heavy enemy counter attacks along the Champagne front near Lacourtine with fierce trench fighting and partial German reoccupation. Belgian front remains calm. French troops in Serbia win a brilliant junction with Serbians at Krivolsk, turning Bulgarian flanks as Serbs press in.
The case attempts to implicate Hon. H. E. Young in a coal mining matter in Victoria fail as explanations show stock promises were made before his ministerial duties. Defense argues shares issued from syndicate holdings, not company stock, and that coal land acquisitions fall under administrative acts. Continued in Page Three.
Mrs A G Forster bid farewell to her husband Captain Forster as the Fifty Fourth Battalion, then waiting at Vernon, prepared to depart for England. The unit includes many Prince Rupert men and officers.
Steps are underway to form a Western Star branch in Prince Rupert. Miss Lily Innis of New York arrived last evening to assist, and this morning Mrs. BE Douglas Mrs. R. L. Rice and Mrs. Comisky of Vancouver arrived by steamer to help organize the work.
A four story building fire in Pittsburg causes thirteen deaths and eight injuries with all victims being young women except one. A thorough investigation into the cause has been ordered after dramatic rescues by two men who guided several jumpers to safety.
Allied force of twenty battleships bombards Dede Agatch, the Aegean Bulgarian railroad terminal, with air guidance. Barracks docks and shipping are wrecked, railway station destroyed, and casualties exceed a thousand soldiers and ten civilians.
Read in casualty lists a city man Pte. Alex Donald died in action after joining the second contingent led by Prince Rupert and serving in the 48th Battalion. The steamer Prince George later saluted his memory by flying the flag at half mast. His widow Mrs Jane Donald is sister to Capt. Donald of the Prince George. Captain Curry of the 42nd Battalion was also reported killed in action in Ottawa.
City council last evening amended the early closing bylaw by striking out grocery stores from its operation amid a petition by twenty five retail salesmen. The city solicitor advised final passage of the amendment before any new bylaw covering groceries, with further action likely next week.
City Hall will stay open from 7 to 9 each evening this week to receive names of residents wishing to register as householders or license holders. The city solicitor may attend tonight and tomorrow night. Alderman Casey proposed the measure and suggested the Mayor and city clerk cover the remaining evenings. A. R. Stoney and family from South Fort George arrived by last night’s train.
Rome reports three Austrian planes bombed Venice injuring three. Italian forces claimed success at Monte Nordica in Ledro Valley and captured a fort in Corderole Valley. Carso front advances include San Martell with over 1,000 prisoners and seven guns seized.
Petrograd reports a British submarine sank the German armored cruiser Prince Adelbert near Libau in the Baltic. The Prince Adelbert measured 394 feet in length, displaced 8 858 tons, and housed 557 crew.
London reports King George has traveled to France to visit the British army on the field and to meet Allied troops. The monarch urges voluntary recruitment, praising subjects for sacrifices and calling for more volunteers to sustain the fight against Germany. J. D. Scott of Vancouver arrived by the G T P train last night.
The regular meeting of the Cooks and Waiters Union will be held Thursday night at 8 30 p.m. in Carpenters Hall. Members are urged to attend.
