Change of Command Made in the Dardanelles

Major Charles Carmichael Monro is appointed to command the Dardanelles expedition, succeeding Gen. Sir Ian Hamilton who returns to England. Temporary command will be held by Major General William Birdwood until Monro’s arrival.

Two More Veterans Return From War to City Yesterday

Two Canadian veterans who served in Festubert return home, Edward Biddle and H J Bradbury, both wounded but discharged as unfit for further service. Bradbury recalls near-parapet heroism and Capt Moore and Major Peck. the men describe receiving gratitude in France and England as the city welcomes them back.

Early City Bylaw On Closing Defective Says Magistrate

Arrival from the east notes Hon W J Bowser visited his mother and reports good conditions in the eastern provinces. The grocers bylaw for seven o clock closing is deemed defective by Stipendary Magistrate J H McMullin due to signatory inconsistencies. City solicitor reports to council and seeks amendment to make the bylaw effective. Ald Edge warns against missteps. Kerr proposes 6 o clock closure if revived. Beveridge notes complaints from fruit stores and favors seven. A resolution to draft a new grocery closing bylaw is moved.

Bulgaria Defeated as Allies Advance Into Country

London report states Allied troops defeated the Bulgarian army and occupied Strumitza north of the Greek boundary. The Drima Grahova front saw Austrian attacks against the Montenegri ns repulsed with heavy losses and one Austrian airplane brought down.

Fighting At Many Points Along The Western Front

Paris reports an official war update describing heavy artillery and infantry actions across the Western Front. Battles rage near Boisenhache Valley, Souchez, and in Champagne with bombardments, ambushes, and fortifications under fire.
