City council members debated advertising bylaws and weekly versus daily newspaper publication. Figures showed Empire and Journal volumes led total city printing costs, prompting calls for open competition and lowest bids while cautioning against favoritism and noncompetitive orders.
F. V. Clarke of this city was acquitted at the Vancouver assizes after being accused of forging his roommate's name at the post office to obtain money remitted from the Old Country. He denied knowledge of the forgery and was cleared.
HW S Clements M P for Comox-Atlin arrived in the city Wednesday evening and left Thursday for Bella Coola to assess local needs. He travels with William Manson to better serve constituents in Ottawa and plans visits to Alberni and Comox before the House meets next month. Accompanied by Sproule of Vancouver, the party is backed by the Conservative Club of the city hosting a smoker for Mr. Clements next week.
Superintendent of Police Colin Campbell has been named to succeed F. S. Hussey, who died recently. Campbell, with the provincial force for many years, begins his duties in Victoria and is said to have an excellent record.
P B Sands and his Flanders auto arrived in the city after a 37 day Seattle to Hazelton trip. Sands won the Challoner Mitchell trophy. party praised the route and praised Prince Rupert. A banquet at Hazelton Hotel featured district products and speeches by local officials and business leaders.
In Toronto Hon George Graham declares intent to re enter public life and return to the House. He reports offers of three seats in the West two in Ontario and several in Quebec while also receiving offers to enter business. He may spend the first short session in the press gallery among the boys if needed.
Col Richard Wolfenden longtime King's Printer in the province since 1863 died in Victoria a week ago yesterday, ending a notable tenure of public service in the colonial administration.
The Canadian Pacific Railway will maintain summer-like service through winter due to rising passenger traffic and add two local trains between Winnipeg and Calgary. The Imperial Limited will run with minimal winter delay, linking Vancouver with Victoria and Seattle. Westbound No 2 departs Vancouver at 7 30 p m after steamship arrivals, while the Vancouver to Winnipeg and Toronto Express routes keep their schedules with little change. Prince Rupert is expected to have its busiest winter season yet.
Mrs Catherine Stover dies at 26 after brain illness in Prince Rupert hospital. Wife of BE L Stover, she arrived from Hazelton with two young children and three other relatives. Funeral services were held at the Roman Catholic Church with Hayner Bros arranging. burial to follow in New Westminster.
A pretty wedding took place in the Port Simpson Methodist Church on Thursday evening October 5 at 6 30 PM. Mr Frank West and Miss Eva Campbell both of Bella Bella were married by Rev G H Raley. A marriage supper followed at the Mission House with toasts from Rev Raley Chiefs Dudoward and Wallace and Mr Kelly of Bella Bella.
Mayor Manson says he will not seek re election next January. The city administrator notes his good leadership and business sense, and a new mayor will need to be chosen to serve the public next term.
The city council advanced plans for clearing 120 acres around Clear Lake to remove timber likely to pollute the water. Col Davis urged early action before snow, while Alds Hilditch Clayton and Douglas debated work methods and staffing. Ten bids for five divisions and both station and contract options were approved, with double newspaper notices ordered for publicity.
Fr W Bohler, a leading Skeena River rancher, married Mrs June Lever of Washeto Ont yesterday at the Central Hotel. Rev F W Kerr officiated with a small group present. The couple will reside on Bohler's Kitsumkalum Valley ranch renowned for strawberries shipped to Prince Rupert.
