The city council discussed bylaw rules limiting speaking time and requiring written inquiries. Alderman Newton objected to strict enforcement and vowed to stay silent through year end, but the chair noted no power to excuse attendance as the session adjourned after 10 PM.
The council accepted the resignation of A. H. Allison as second engineer at the electric light station. A ballot chose between McKenzie and Johnston, with five votes to three. McKenzie, a married city resident, was appointed.
After the battle George Black traveled south by the Princess May on his way to Vancouver after aiding Dr. Alfred Thompson the member elect. The Yu kon veteran helped bolster the Liberal campaign alongside early entrant Congdon and was greeted by supporters on his departure.
Dr. Alfred Thompson, newly elected Yukon member of Parliament, arrives in Prince Rupert before heading to Ottawa. He plans to push for improved winter mail service to Dawson, support quartz mining with sampling works, and push road and cross-border highway developments reaching into Dawson. He notes Yukon gold output this year and the Princess May’s southbound return with the latest shipments.
The Ladies' Aid of the Presbyterian Church will hold a sale of aprons home cooking and candies at the Church Hall Fourth Avenue on Tuesday afternoon and evening November 25 from 8 to 10 Tea will be served.
Tomorrow at 8 pm the Conservative Association holds its annual meeting in Mc Intyre Hall to elect officers for the coming year and name delegates to the provincial convention. A large member enrolment is anticipated and all 1912 members are urged to attend.
At a recent meeting in the club rooms on Fourth Avenue the Pioneer Club elected David H. Hays as president J. Fred Ritchie as vice president H. P. Wilson as treasurer A. G. Forester as secretary and directors Samuel Harrison C. P. H. Newcombe W. S. Benson and O. H. Nelson for the coming year.
Lynch Bros and O Besner propose to take debentures bearing 6 percent interest at par value to cover the sidewalk cost. The council will pass the bylaw after the engineer prepares the required data and work proceeds without delay.
At last night’s council meeting Alderman Morrissey warned that sewage discharge into Hays Creek could create a pestilential cesspool if stoppages occur. The engineer explained contingency plans including a temporary outlet until G T P fixes works. Aldermen pressed for guarantees. the issue was ultimately dropped.
BH. Mann was appointed stenographer in the engineer's department by the council last evening with a salary of 80 dollars a month. Alderman Douglas opposed the appointment, while Alderman Hilditch argued the engineer has heavy clerical work and the stenographer is needed, to be returned as a line man when no longer required.
J W Stewart of Welch Stewart and Stewart has left Prince Rupert after weeks there to meet G T P chief engineer Mr. Kelliher and Dominion government representative Mr. Schrieber approaching Prince Rupert from the eastern Rockies. Stewart says work on the route is progressing normally.
Sir William Mackenzie of the Canadian Northern Railway told Premier McBride in Ottawa that two years will see transcontinental trains into Vancouver. By December 15 this year local service will run Port Mann to Hope, and the Edmonton coast line will be completed.
Mr. David H Hays plans a sale of G T P lots in Section Two at the Empress Theatre. The auction starts Wednesday November 29 and runs Thursday with no evening sale. News on continuing the sale after Thursday depends on discussions with head office and steamer arrivals.
A detailed map prepared by Schreiber & Co under J H Pillsbury shows street levels and topography for Section Two lots to be sold on the 29th. Blueprints are on sale now. Also noted is work starting on a new home for Indian Agent C Perry at Metlakatla, overseen by Green & Kennedy of the city.
Conservatives attention. The Annual Meeting of the Conservative Association will be held in McIntyre Hall.
Nomination period closes for the 1912 year with admission by membership card. Applications for membership and dues must reach the Secretary by 6 p.m. Saturday November 11 1911 to participate in the proceedings.
Musicians urge formation of a city band with Indian Village ties used in past years. About $1000 needed for instruments, with Godson named instructor and Lee Baker as secretary. Applicants propose local residents form the nucleus while awaiting Finance Committee action.
After council and electric light committee review the coal purchase, the contract for 225 tons is awarded to Union Transfer Company. Debate centered on cost per hour of power, with comparisons showing Rogers Black coal at 10.02 cents per hour and Kelly at 9.08 cents per hour. The report was adopted amid calls for fuller documentation.
The city council received Fred Peters, K C, presenting a report on bottle licences. The Licencing Board governs licences. granted licences were in order while refusals were out of order and not acted upon. Alderman Newton pressed for fuller details as Alderman Douglas noted omissions.
