British losses in Channel raid and war loan notes

London reports First Lord of the Admiralty says six drift net boats and the torpedo destroyer Flirt were lost in the English Channel raid. Germany lost two destroyers Dame and Throws. In Paris, November 1, subscriptions to the second war loan exhausted post office tellers, forcing improvised receipts. The Deutschland arrived in New London with chemicals from Bremen on its second transatlantic voyage.

Pastor Russell Dies on Railroad Journey

Pastor Russell, leader of the Bible Students movement, died of heart failure during a railroad trip from Los Angeles to New York. Sergi Stokes of Vancouver, recruiting for the 230th Battalion of Foresters overseas, is in the city to enlist men and meets in the Red Cross rooms. D. H. Morrison returns from a visit to Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Quiet wedding ties Barnsley and Robinson in St Andrew’s

The marriage of Miss Clara Barnsley to Mr Arthur Leonard Robinson was performed by Rev Canon Rix at St Andrew's Church. The bride wore a traveling suit and was given away by her father Mr John Barnsley. Attendants included Mrs Sidney Winsby and Mr Winsby. The ceremony ended with supper at the Barnsley home and the couple departed for the south aboard the Chelohsin later.

German submarine U-58 returns to home port

Berlin reports the German submarine U-58 has returned safely to a German port after causing havoc with shipping off the Atlantic coast recently.

A Tribune dispatch reports Romanian troops broke through harsh snowstorms in the Transylvanian Alps and forced Austro German forces from Vulcan Pass. The relief permits the western Romanian army to ease the Austro German pressure.

Fortnightly Club Reorganizes Elects Officers for Season

Presbyterian Fortnightly Club held its annual reorganization meeting in the sharch hall. Officers elected include Hallows as President D C McRae and D D Mr McCorkindale as Vice President, with Douglas Stork as Secretary and Frank Moore as Treasurer. A series of short addresses followed on women’s franchise, education, cost of living, and trade unions. An instrumental solo by Miss Irwin closed the event.
