Portugal Insurrection Crushed and Lisbon Bombarded

Madrid reports the May 15 bombardment of Lisbon by mutinous warships caused heavy damage and many deaths. The insurrection in Portugal is crushed and Manuel de Arriaga reportedly disappeared after a meeting with the Portuguese leader. Spain pledges no intervention beyond protecting its subjects.

Westholme Theatre Reopens Under New Management

Mr Albert owner of the building has taken over Westholme Theatre from the former company. He will run the house with new staff and full control. The theatre will be closed Monday and Tuesday to enable preparations and a new service for the public.

Many American Boats Bringing In Halibut To Coast Flats

The fishing trade grows with the new order in council allowing landing of United States catches for shipment. In the last two days over 100000 pounds of halibut were landed at the Cold Storage plant from US boats including 18000 pounds by the Merenger and 14000 pounds by the Samson. The prior day saw about four American boats enter with 60000 pounds.

Vancouver skipper Barney Johnson joins submarine service

Lieutenant Barney L. Johnson better known as Captain Barney Johnson formerly commanded the G. T. P. steamer Prince Rupert. He sails to England to enter the Royal Naval Canadian Volunteer Reserve submarine branch after years with Union Steamship and as Vancouver junior pilot.

French Army Reports Successes Across Front in WWI

An official dispatch states French forces have gained trenches north of Ypres and near Arras and Notre Dame, captured sections around Steenstraate and the canal bridge, advanced north of the sugar refinery, and repelled attacks south of Lorette. In Italy, Salandra remains premier as riots erupt over war delays. Near Neuville St. Vaast, French troops seize and hold northern village areas.

Manitoba Conservatives Form Cabinet as No Election Looms

T C Norris named premier and formed a cabinet including President of Council Railway Commissioner and Minister of Provincial Lands. The administration plans no election for now and expects ten seats to be vacated by Conservatives, with seven ministers among them.

Geodetic survey kicks off with special boat Metra arrival

Major survey work starts along the coast under Dominion government auspices. NOS: Ogilvie, known for the Canadian Alaskan Boundary Survey, returns to direct geodetic work with a dedicated oil burner Metra to handle water transit. Headquarters at Prince Rupert. The effort will run about four years and establish fixed points for future hydrographic and mapping needs.
