German losses are estimated near 8000 as British forces fight back. Russians gain ground. Italians score successes against Austria. Britain defends Bethmann-Hollweg and Bosnian crisis claims. Rome reports Austrian pressure repelled along the Tyrol front with Italian counterattacks near Asiago.
A German destroyer struck a mine and went down off Zebrugge on May 31. The public is asked to remember the Red Cross Society home cooking sale on Friday run by Mrs. McColl and Mrs. Jennings at the Red Cross Rooms on Sixth Street.
Copenhagen dispatch to the Daily Mail reports 800 killed 1 400 wounded and 4 600 missing among German forces in the North Sea engagement. Survivors say the Hindenburg might have sunk while Vice Admiral Beatty laments lost lives and The Telegraph cautions against undue pessimism about Britain’s sea power.
Weather slows halibut fishery as boats bring smaller hauls yet trade remains active on the Exchange. Yesterday eight boats sold their catches, including Atlin Fisheries buys of Mar Salice 4 000 Guilford 4 000 Avilde 5 000 Macnolia 9 000 and Corona 10 000 pounds at 8 3 8 cents per pound. Cold Storage bought Tuladi 8 000 and Lillian M 4 000 at 8 1 2 cents, while Morengen 18 000 later sold at seven cents. Large spring salmon lots fetched around six cents.
The Toronto Highlanders commander Col. Marshall, killed at the front, is mourned by officers and troops. His brother W S Marshall of Prince Rupert attended, with full military honors at a small village behind a Canadian historic site. The ceremony included pipe bands, firing party, and mourners from many units.
W P Hinton manager of the Freight and Passenger Department and Chief Commissioner Drayton of the Railway Commission are slated to visit the west next week. They will inspect the G T P line during a regular tour.
The Gosden perjury trial jury retired at 6:30 with no verdict by nightfall. Robert Gosden testified Macdonald knew about Scott and the gang and helped fund them. Gosden, cross examined, said he spent much of his life in prison. Miss Allen testified she loaned Macdonald $50 the evening Golden says he received the funds.
Petrograd reports that in the general Russian offensive along the Pripet Marshes to the Romanian frontier the Russians seized more than forty thousand men, 77 guns, 134 machine guns and 90 bomb throwers. The Duma greeted the news with cheers.
Paris reports on June 7 that German forces withdrew in disorder after leaving their dead at Verdun. The French repulsed a strong assault, inflicting heavy losses that halted the German drive.
Lord Bryce spoke at London University College on the war’s effect on the German people. He recalled Germany as a university student and argued the modern doctrines of omnipotence and necessity do not reflect 1848 liberalism. He urged that Germany be defeated to unlearn pernicious doctrines and revert to an earlier spirit, noting two empires at odds in the world.
Paris reports the German assault on Fort Vaux failed with heavy losses. A furious bombardment continues as German forces press the siege.
