Petrograd reports a strong fleet appeared in the Baltic Sea and exchanged shots with the Russian fleet near the Gulf of Riga. The engagement comes as Allied forces press for footholds and deny German naval access in the region.
Sir Charles Frederick Fraser educationist and journalist born 1850 in Windsor Nova Scotia is knighted for a career advancing blind instruction. He led the Halifax School for the Blind since 1873, built a renowned academic and technical institution and promoted equality and opportunity for the blind.
Paris reports French capture of a Souchez sugar refinery where the basement held German dead. German batteries were broken by French artillery. Germans attacked Ablain but were repelled with reinforcements aiding the French retaking the position. In three weeks the regiment buried about 8,000 Germans and captured over 8,000 prisoners.
Mr. Newcombe of this city has joined the ambulance corps after volunteering for the front in the south and will proceed to England with the unit.
The government in Ottawa relaxes export controls on Canadian ores including zinc copper and lead. Special licenses allow shipments to allies and the United States when exports cannot reach enemies.

Major Morrison reports 17 days of continuous action, 16 000 shells fired, six guns out of action, five officers and 75 men killed or wounded, and ongoing fierce combat with the Germans.
Yesterday's baseball results from the Northwestern and Coast leagues show Tacoma Vancouver Victoria Seattle Aberdeen and other matchups with varied scores. Word arrived that Walter Smith son of Ver nor W Smith former city resident died of head wounds sustained in France while serving in World War I. His uncle J A Smith received word he died in hospital from the injuries.

French forces hold over half the northern eastern section and pushed 450 meters north at Labrinth while engaging at Lorette Neuville and Labyrinth. A German gun shelling Verdun was located and its concrete base damaged.

The aged about 24 Brantford man reportedly lost the sergeant pay book and letters while navigating barbed wire. He expects to rejoin his unit soon.
