Two large German aircraft were lost off the coast of Denmark on the first day of Britain’s paper blockade. One was a Zeppelin with eleven crew saved and four drowned. the other, a Parsival, with the entire crew saved. A long list of named survivors and from various Canadian and American cities followed.
The Canadian Club held its annual meeting in the court house naming officers for the year. President is Bishop Du Vernet with Wm. Manson M.P.P. as first vice president and G. R. Naden as second vice president. Rev. W. E. Collison is treasurer with Dr. W. B. Clayton as secretary. Judge Young retires as president and the reports show $25 on hand. The group expects more speakers now the GT P line is complete.
The local contingent, including Prince Rupert volunteers, entrains for the front with the 80th Battalion. Officers and men express relief to depart for service, arriving in Vancouver and awaiting orders as they sail with the Third Contingent. Col Duff Stuart provides the latest briefing on the move.
Canadian Express increases local presence by naming A. D. Gillies as city agent to handle all express business previously managed by G. T. P. at the wharf. W. H. Nattress of Canadian Express confirms the move driven by growing fish trade and rising demand in the area.
W G Weichel of North Waterloo moves to reply to the Speech from the Throne praising the Duke and Duchess of Connaught for their wartime support. He notes Belgian and European war shocks, the failure of arbitration, Lord Roberts warnings, and Canada’s naval feats. He cites financial unity with banks and Bank of England, urging Empire welfare and stronger Canadian resolve.
Berlin reports a decisive Russian repulse on the East Prussian border and front dispatches express Kaiser Wilhelm’s joy and sorrow over German territory devastation. Petrograd notes optimism, Paris cites minor gains, and Austrians shell Belgrade. A St John’s hospital drive plans a 500 bed unit for wounded soldiers with $500 per bed yearly cost.
The Prince Rupert Cadets No 482 plan a 10 15 am Sunday parade at the Exhibition Building for a Divine Service at the Methodist Church. Parents and friends are invited to attend a production and to buy goods made in Canada while Machial urges Canadian made sides machinery and other essentials. Mr Weichel praises being Canadian and British subject despite German origin.
Orders from Matter J. for the 68th Regiment Earl Grey's Own Rifles dated 7 February 1915. A Company to parade at the Exhibition Building on Monday and Thursday at 74th mont. Battalion to parade Sunday 21 February at 10 am for divine service. Lieut Hiallok-Websten listed.
Passengers arriving on the British steamer Megantic from Liverpool said British waters are under tight protection with destroyers patrolling near the Channel. Utica resident Charles A. Nelson described the voyage as guarded through the Channel and into harbor as if passing a line of warships. A horticultural society meeting in New York was postponed to February 22 due to members’ other commitments. R. W. Sargent arrived from Tarjeton last night. Mr. Nelson noted the rapid back and forth of destroyers and the tense atmosphere onboard. Mrs. Frank A. Ellis arrived in the city by train.
Buenos Ayres reports the German steamer Holger has landed crews from the British steamers Hemisphere and Rotaro and from the ships Sumatra and Wilfred. These vessels were sunk by the Kron Prinz Wilhelm off Brazil in January.
Rheims continues to face daily bombardment by German forces as of February 18, with reports detailing ongoing attacks on the city and surrounding areas. The siege situation persists amid ongoing military operations and wartime tensions.
Premier McBride addresses charges of socialism and criticizes measures linked to the Canadian Northern Railway project. He claims provincial expenditures reached 645,000,000 over four years while laborers’ medical funds were mismanaged and calls for accountability.
