Ottawa reports Premier Borden to return from England next week with fifty thousand additional reinforcements likely to be called. The dispatch notes heightened artillery actions on the Western Front and aerial fighting at two miles altitude amid ongoing war efforts.
In the Vosges three German planes from Soissons and three from Compiegne aimed at Paris but failed to reach it. They dropped bombs at Mogent sur Maine Montmorency Montfermeil Ribecourt and Compiegne. Two male nurses and a child killed in Compiegne. Our airmen shelled and pursued the hostile craft. A squadron commander chased one plane to about 11 000 feet and brought it down north of Sonlis. the pilot was incinerated.
A 1915 letter from Ottawa thanks Prince Rupert citizens for a $1000 draft toward a Lewis machine gun. The weapon will be sent to the 48th Battalion overseas in the name of local supporters, subject to military necessity and approval. James A. Lougheed signs as Acting Minister with L. Victoria reports a general review of the lumber industry noting orders for seven cargoes totaling over 20 000 000 feet and a disbursement of at least 250 000 within the province. May to July logs match last year despite war, with 7 000 000 feet exported monthly mostly cedar and hemlock, aiding employment and treasury.

Lucas Hauptmann of the Saxon Verein is arrested for the murder of Rev. Edmund Kayser in Gray Indiana. Kayser, once a member of his congregation, had accused Kayser of fraud in real estate. Investigations indicate Kayser was a secret agent for German Ambassador Von Bernstorff, with police exploring a possible motive tied to pro German remarks and a possible woman involvement.
A total of 600 was raised using a tag system. London reports confirm a real Russian retreat rather than a rout. Germany captured undefended fortresses as Polishoff announces a new army of a million. Grand Duke Nicholas is said to be luring the German forces to their doom.
Word reached the city that H. Sinclair, a former Bank of Montreal teller here, was killed in action. He went south to enlist when war began, with initial reports indicating wounds later revised to death.

On August 28 Montreal reports that by command of Sir Robert Borden there will be no official reception for Premier and Sir Sam Hughes upon their return next week. The decision reflects official restraint toward the visiting leaders.
